Comment: I have an old Asus p2b. A friend of mine has a few retail P3's he wants to get rid of at a fair price. My p2b will support a 133mhz fsb. Can I swap in a P3 slot 1 in place of my P2 slot 1? He has an 1100 sitting there, and I'd just love to speed up "Old Reliable" Running at 66Mhz in a 400Mhz world.

Reply: (edit)From memory there is no such thing as a 1100MHz PIII, are you sure it isn't a 1133MHz? Anyway, from memory all PIII 1133's used the Tualatin core with a 370pin PPGA2 layout. Assuming you are just getting the chip, you will need a Slot 1 to Socket 370 PPGA converted, then you will need a PPGA to PPGA2 converter. I have seen this work before, but we only had success with 440BX chipset based boards. Adam

Reply: (edit)Hi Adam, Oldsystem I came up with these for slot 1: Pentium III 1133EB 1133Mhz 133Mhz Coppermine Pentium III 1100E 1100Mhz 100Mhz Coppermine but I have no idea if either would work on that board. Skip

Reply: (edit)Hey Skip Have you got a link? Come to think of it, I recall seeing something about PIII's over 1GHz with a coppermine core, but they were recalled soon after their release. The coppermine core simply couldn't handle speeds above 1GHz. Adam

Reply: (edit)You have to find out if the board supports it. P2 Slot 1 runs on 2volt, and the PIII Coppermine is 1.75 and Tualutin is 1.475. As for multi and speed, at worst it goes to the lower setting. I don't think your board support 133 FSB.

Reply: (edit)If you use a slot 1 converter, it has a VRM on it so you can set the voltage accordingly, the only reason you cannot use a Tualatin on one of these converters is because the pin layout is slightly different, another way Intel tried to shaft its customers. Adam

Reply: (edit)I do have the bios update to support the coppermine v.1012. and he has 4 or 5 of them ranging from the 600's up to 1133. Maybe I shouldn't mess with it, But I have the Tim the toolman Tailor disease "MORE POWER" Running at 66Mhz in a 400Mhz world.

Reply: (edit)Try this link http://www.asus.com/support/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx it is from the ASUS site it will give you a detailed list of what can and can't be used as well as what MB revision and what BIOS revision are required. Also try http://www.powerleap.com/ there maybe be a Tualatin core solution that will work in you application they even have a software tool to test your system and and give you a product list
