Overvolting a CPU for 24/7

Comment:

How damaging would it be to run a 1.35v CPU @ 1.5v, along with higher clock speed and 100% CPU load, for 24/7?

I just read about Sudden Northwood Death Syndrome, in which some P4s running at increased voltages would become less and less stable before finally giving up the ghost. Would the higher voltage affect my Athlon X2 in the same way if I ran it 24/7?

Putting extra voltage through anything is not good, but all overclockers take it as a risk. Up to you if you want to take the risk?

Many X2's will overclock quite well without a voltage increase, but it depends on the CPU. How much are you overclocking?

How about the naming the specific CPU you have, along with the rest of your system specs?

I've always taken CPU overvolting with extreme caution. It took me all of my "computer courage" as well as the purchase of a Thermaltake Big Typhoon to take my Opty 185 from 1.35v to 1.45v so that I could hit the 3.2GHz mark.

Had I not been able to hit 3.2GHz at 1.45, I would've returned the HSF and just stuck with 3.0GHz @ stock voltage. Wouldn't have risked 1.5v.

I've had a fear of increasing CPU voltage too much ever since killing a 1.4GHz Tualeron by raising its voltage to 1.8v (from 1.475v) and running it at 2.1GHz.

I have one of the crappier X2 3800s. It will only take 2.3GHz at 1.35v. I've discovered that by running it at 1.5v, I can do 2.5GHz. But after reading about S.N.D.S., and now Jackbomb's post, I really don't know if I should do it. Anyone have any POSITIVE stories about overvolting their CPU?

I dont believe the trade off of 200 mhz is worth the added voltage.

Thanks Robert, that's what I was thinking as well. I guess I'll run it at 2.3GHz with 1.35v.
