Hi i was wondering if it was possible to overlock a 266mhz comp. The reason why i am asking is because after i formated it with windows xp it was working nicely and i think this was because of its 128MB Ram. But after only two days of normal use it starts freezing at the welcome screen. So my questions are can i overlock it? How much by say 50 to around 100mhz? Will the CPU fry?

A 266MHz CPU? Even if you overclock it by 50-100MHz, it wouldn't make much difference. And 128MB is barely enough RAM for WinXP. That rig is much better suited for Win98SE or WinME

266MHz is definitely slooooow, even with '98.

There is only one satisfying way to boot a computer.

Overclocking that thing would be a waste of time, unless it's done simply for the sake of experimenting. Probably the best you'd do is 300MHz (4 x 75) & I doubt the performance would be very noticeable, if at all. Increasing your RAM amount to 256MB or more would be a better move.

Win2K is a better choice than WinXP, but I still recommend Win98SE or ME

If this is the only machine you have and don't plan on getting a new one, or you just want to experiment, you can get a slot 1 one to socket 370 adaptor (super slocket). If this is a slot 1 PII, we are talking about? then put a 466 or 500 celeron in it. Don't pay more than $10 for each item. This could make it a usable computer for a couple years, but its still better suited for 98se. This is exactly the setup I gave to my sister-in-law.

You never said what 266MHz CPU you have, what board, or what RAM? I'm sure it's a 66MHz FSB CPU & the multi is 4x...it may or may not be locked. Usually, increasing the FSB to 75MHz is the max safe limit on a setup like that because the PCI bus will go too far outta spec
