i have a pentium 4 550 3.4ghz cpu
at idle it is at about 68c and at load its at 75. is this normal and if not what should it be running at. i already bought a new heatsink and fan from newegg.com. . . it didn't change my temp from my stock fan. also my cpu says its dual core. it says dual core in system info and in the control panel - system - device man it says 2 cpus and also in the directx diagnostic it says 2 cpus but when i look at the p4 550 online i see no dual core

do you know whats up?

Your P4 uses HyperThreading...the 2nd core is virtual.

Your temps are on the high side but not uncommon for a P4 Prescott. Make sure your HSF is mounted properly & that you applied the thermal compound correctly. Also, your case needs to be properly vented.

"what do you mean virtual?"

It's not real, it's make-believe:

"Hyper-Threading works by duplicating certain sections of the processor—those that store the architectural state—but not duplicating the main execution resources. This allows a Hyper-Threading equipped processor to pretend to be two "logical" processors to the host operating system, allowing the operating system to schedule two threads or processes simultaneously."
