I am running an Asus A7N with nvidia chipset and an Athlon XP 1800 which came with a volcano 5. Initially i had problems getting the PC to boot and it wasn't until I took the fan off, pulled out the processor to look at the pins and reseated it that it began booting properly. Only now it would not stay on for more than 10 seconds then the PC would shut off. I noticed the longer I left the machine off the longer it would take for it to power off after i booted. The fan works properly despite trying to get that thermal peice perfectly straight underneath. Is this a processor problem or is it overheating? And if it is overheating, whats the deal? Try thermal grease? Thx in advance

I had that exact problem and it was caused because I used the thermal film that has a tiny bit of foil in the middle. A little bit of the foil was shorting out the processor and as soon as i removed it and went back to the thermal goop stuff it worked perfect! Hope that helps!

I had a similar trouble with AMD procesors, and I resolved them using a heatsink with double fan and a little of thermal grease too (if you put grease in exess, it will drop.
I also instaled an aditional flat turbine mounted over the heatsink to increase cooling performance.
By the way, since I had this kind of troubles I started working using Intel boxed products. Intel includes with each processor a heatsink and the fan certified. They also give a three years of warranty on this kind of products.
Hoping to help you, I wish good luck.

Thanks for the feedback. I found out the fan that came with the processor, Volcano 5, is not even made to cool a 1.5Ghz processor which is probably half of the problem. I am going to go out and get a Volcano 7+ and some thermal grease. This should probably fix me up. Thanks again

An older, Volcano II will work just as good and save you money to boot (pardon the pun). My temps are *WAY* down, and that's what I use - along with a couple of case fans - one each, front and rear.
(see post closer to top of CPU page)

Hey Intel, AMD rulez!

Please someone help me asap. Thank you.
