ok, i was sick of already pre built machines my last one crashed every 5min so i decided to build my first pc using the xp2000 originally out of my old pc here is what i bought:

Asus a7n8x2.0 Bios Rev 1003 (currantly...im not sure how to properly update it)
crucial 512ddr pc2700
Hercules ATI 9200SE
120gb maxtor hard drive
80gb Seagate hard drive
and i used the heatsink and fan as well as the cpu itself and the cd writer out of my old system

i got it all built and installed the asus probe which told me my cpu was varying from 55-70 degrees which i presumed was too hot...also i wanted to get more out of my pc so i decided to get a new cpu and fan.
i bought a barton xp2500+ and a Coolermaster Aero7+ it came with some thermal paste stuff which ive never encounted before but still i think i got it right new cpu in...new heatsink/fan on and i bought some cheap case fans to help reduce the temp even more
the fan lowest settings the cpu is anywhere from 38-46 degrees full load and with the fan max i can get it down to about 40-41 so i decided i would try overclocking it as its like 20 degrees lower than my previous
the multiplier is...well its 166x11 i think so i changed it from 11 to 11.5 and when i post it up it just locks up..its completely random i can be on the pc for 1 second or 20 seconds but its always very close to me turning it on...i thought i may have done something wrong with the thermal paste but once i was on long enough to load up the asus probe and the degree had only moved 1 degree.
i dont know y i cant overclock it, is it my psu do u think? its only 350watt and i have 2 case fans, the heatsink/fan 2 hdds floppy cd writer and soon a dvd writer so would buying a bigger one...maybe even a 550 would this help my problems???

if its anything to do with the voltage ill need help with that, im very new to all this overclocking stuff so im really not sure what ive noticed is i can only change my fsb to 100 133 166 or 200 not step it up individual so im gonna try putting the fsb to 200 and lowering the multipler to like 9 or 9.5 to see if that helps..apart from doing this i really dont have a clue

any ideas plz????

thx in advance

Have you locked your AGP and pci frequencies? What's your RAM's timings and voltage? Vcore? When overclocking, I'd try to lower the multiplier and raise the FSB first to see how high the FSB can go, then adjust Vcore and Vdimm and bring the multi up. If you want to stick to 11.5X and 166 FSB, try to raise Vcore or Vdimm a step at a time. Odds are you'll get into OS after the voltage increase. Good luck.

i have the 2500+ also and an abit nf7-s mobo...i did some research on what was the best mobo for overclocking and found this one.....my goal was 400 fsb, so i got a stick of ddr400 and as i was making small adjustments in fsb, i kept my memory in sync to whatever the fsb was at the time...after each change, i tested for stability by using memtest86,sandra burn-ins and 3dmark2001...reached my goal of 400 fsb and i'm happy with that...in your case...

the memory may be what's holding you back....try this... lower multiplier to 10 and change the fsb in small increments and test until you reach a goal of 400 fsb (from 166 to 200 fsb) then bump up the multiplier in .5 increments until you can't boot or there's no stability, then lower it to where it was good, that will tell you your max multiplier

i'm at 200 X 11 @ stock Vcore of 1.65...i have some good cooling ( program for temp and voltage monitoring that comes with abit mobos match what the bios sys, right now at 10:00 am, i'm running a cool 35 celsius

your mobo has an expert mode where you can change the fsb 1mhz at a time.

ok i havent tried anything else yet
about this voltage i dont really understand any of it but i have the asus probe which tells me wot they are so there:

+12V is now at 12.672 im sure ive seen it up to 12.8
+5 is at 4.999....+5 and its below 5 :S never noticed that
+3.3 is 3.328
VCore - 1.68

i dont know how to adjust any of these..if theres a program or u do it in the bios i dont think i can answer someones question about the ran sync or something...coz i dont have a clue wot it is..also were is this expert mode for upping the FSB in 1mhz bits coz i havent seen it..im gonna pop into the bios in a minute actually try and note down some figures or find something else...
thx so far
i may Overclock it yet!...

VCore has been upped is now at 1.744

i tried to put the multiplier to 11.5...nope crashed at the windows music thing...getting stressful now i dunno why it wont work

also i do not have the option to put the cpu fsb up in 1mhz increments..its not there all there is is a drop down box 100 133 166 and 200 i put it on 200 and put the multipler down to 9 but the screen wouldnt even turn on...i had to restart it, got the post screen 'AMD Athlon 1100mhz :S
so i just reset it i dont know if theres any other options i need to change..

I believe the current BIOS for your mobo is V1007. You can follow these steps to flash your BIOS: http://www.asus.com/support/english/techref/bios/intro.aspx
Vcore @1.744 is more than needed for moderate overclocking. Try to lower it to 1.7V. What's your RAM's timings? Try to relax it a little bit. Also you may want to use cpu/Ram=5:4 or 4:3 instead of 1:1 as Crucial memory may not be a good overclocker. You mobo should give you this option.

advanced chipset options in bios gives you 1mhz fsb increments. Try adjusting fsb in small amounts with multilpier set at default of 11.

on here i found the program to put the fsb up on that nvidia system tweak for nforce chipset boards...i didnt have half the options i saw on the screenshots but i did have the chance to increase the fsb, i was going slowly up from the default 332, i could run benchmarks at 370 with no problems at all and my scores was increasing i was at, i was 2000mhz+ but when i changed it to 374 it just crashed immediatly, so i restarted and the default settings were back on, i went into the bios and for a change tried 200fsb at 9.5x = 1900mhz....and it posted!!! i expected it to crash but nope it all loaded up ran Asus Probe was running nicely at 42 degrees, although i dont know what happened as i thought i had turned it off for the night but when i woke up it was still running..so i just turned it off manually, i dont know if it had crashed (im currently elsewhere, ill see when i get home in a few hrs) but if its ok then ill lower the VCore like u said, see if it can do 200 x 10 or 10.5 i would be very pleased to eventually get it to 10.5 or 11 as 2100 2200mhz should be more than enough.

im losing these bios instructions ive never flashed one before, ill see if i can do it when i get home as im still not getting the fsb increments of 1mhz like i said there is just 4 options so im hoping a newer bios should help this problem.

and about the ram timings, i dont know wot that means, all i know is its running at 333mhz and ill see about changing the ratio to see if that helps anything

ok thx

i still havent got the BIOS done yet, not getting these options...:\ ill keep working on it thx for the help

quick update:

200x10.5 might take it to 11 tonight, its all stable ran some benchmarks and stuff...all working good

45 degrees now with the fan pretty low..if i turn it up anymore it sounds like a hairdryer although im sure i wont have a problem when im running something like UT2003 as ill have my headphones in or summat

so whats actually a safe temp for this cpu...its running perfectly stable...200x11 and id probably leave it from then on but ive never seen 50 yet so i guess im pretty safe still?

i did have a little problem earlier and i took the side off my case and it stayed at 38..so i guess thats always an option

ok 1 more...i thought i would try 1 more 0.5 to see...it now posts as a '3200' which is rather nice...i dont think its at 200fsb though i dont know y but tools that give info are saying its at 199 but anyways its giving me a clock speed of 2193mhz so im hardly complaining

idling at 45 still..havent seriously pushed it yet...done things like pcmark2002 and SiSoftware Sandra tests...its doing fine with them ill try 3dmark03 later and hope
