Product: amd
Comment:

Im having the following problem. i bought an amd sempron 2800+ 64bit socket 754 and a biostar K8NHA Grand motherboard. i wanted to overclock it but i dont see how really , advanced chipset settings i put the clock on 225 any higher will crash the pc and says the cmos is invalid and such. i hear that the sempron 64bit 2800+ can go upto 2.0ghz or 2.2 ghz but it only runs now at 1.8 and its like 40C warm Any idea what i can do to overclock ? also warpspeeder doesnt work it will only read the cpu clock speed and thats it. Please help me :)

Try these settings...

Increase CPU External Clock = 250Mhz (Try 5Mhz increment from 200)
CPU Vcore = 1.5v (Try 0.025v increment from stock)
HTT = 3x
RAM = 5:4
AGP/PCI = 66/33

I don't see any mention of RAM, but hopefully you have PC3200.

Overclocking should be done thru the BIOS whenever possible, not thru software like WarpSpeeder. Most of the settings you need to tweak are in the Advanced Chipset Features menu.

DRAM Configuration / Max Memclock (MHz) = 200
CPU overclock MHz = 250
AGP overclock MHz = 66
AGP Aperture Size = 128M
AGP Fast Write = disabled
LDT Speed = 3x

Under the Frequency Control menu, you may have to increase the CPU Voltage to stabilize the overclock

Your CPU temp is fine.

yes i got pc3200 also at DRAM Configuration / Max Memclock i can only choose 100 133 or 166 . And the vcore at what should that be 1.5 ?

"Also what is the max temperature this cpu can handle before it breaks ?"

AMD use to provide a max safe operating temp, but now they give a max case temp, which for your CPU is 70C

"at DRAM Configuration / Max Memclock i can only choose 100 133 or 166"

From the BIOS section of your manual:

Max Memclock (MHz)
Places an artifical memory clock limit on the system. Memory is prevented
from running faster than this frequency.
The Choices: 200 (Default), 166, 133, 100.

CPU Voltage
This item allows you to select CPU Voltage Control.
The Choices: Default (default), +1.7%, +3.4%, +5.1%.

Your CPU's default voltage is 1.4v....

+1.7% = 1.42v
+3.4% = 1.45v
+5.1% = 1.47v

You could actually take it straight to +5.1% without any worries, at least temporarily to see if it stabilizes the overclock.

It sure doesn't sound like it's PC3200.

Try CPUZ. Download it, unzip it, then click on CPUZ.exe. Check both the memory & SPD tabs to see what's listed:

CPUZ says that it is pc3200(200mhz) i got 2 modules both are 256mb . Brand : A-Data
according to cpuz the timings are

CAS-Latency 2.5 clocks
RAS# to CAS# delay 3 clocks
RAS Precharge 3 clocks
Cycle Time 7 clocks
Bank Cycle time 10 clocks
Command rate 2T

hope thats enough info and that you can help me out :)

It's odd that it won't run at the default setting (200MHz). Are you getting this info from the memory tab or the SPD tab? SPD is the info programmed into the RAM, but the memory tab shows the speed that it's actually running at.

Do you have the CPU overclocked yet or not?

yes with the clock to 250 it runs at max 2ghz now and cpuz says from the memorytab 200mhz and from spd also. is 2ghz the fastest i can have it run ? . Also the agp aperture size how much does that need to be.
i got a geforce fx 5700Q with 256mb ddr

I may be misinterpretting this statement:

"Places an artifical memory clock limit on the system. Memory is prevented from running faster than this frequency."

Try the RAM setting at 166MHz & raise the CPU overclock to 220MHz. Then look at CPUZ again (memory tab)...see if the RAM is now running at 183-184MHz & a FSB:DRAM setting of 6:5

I gave you the settings above...here they are again but with the possible change to the memory setting

DRAM Configuration / Max Memclock (MHz) = 166
CPU overclock MHz = 250
AGP overclock MHz = 66
AGP Aperture Size = 128M
AGP Fast Write = disabled
LDT Speed = 3x

If you can run the CPU bus at 250MHz, the CPU speed will be 2.25GHz

if i put it on 250 like it is now it says its 2.0 ghz that ok or should i put it lower then 250 if it shows 2.0 ghz ? at cpuz it says at the cpu : Core speed 1999.6 mhz
and HTT 250.0 mhz

If it's set to 250MHz, the CPU will run at 2.25GHz, not 2.0GHz...if it's not, you're doing something wrong.

Can you confirm the 250MHz setting in CPUZ?

just confirmed a second time with cpuz and the bios all settings are correct and at the following :

DRAM Configuration / Max Memclock (MHz) = 166
CPU overclock MHz = 250
AGP overclock MHz = 66
AGP Aperture Size = 128M
AGP Fast Write = disabled
LDT Speed = 3x

Still the cpu runs at 2ghz tho and not 2.25ghz i dont understand this ?

sorry...I'm getting my CPUs mixed up. The 2800+ normally runs at 1.6GHz (8 x 200). I was thinking it ran at 1.8GHz (9 x 200). So with that board & CPU, 2.0GHz (8 x 250) is the best you're gonna do.

The 5 Ghz Project

While im in this forum, what if i put my computer in a minifridge? would that work? or no cause of the moisture?

If at first you dont suceed in opening a computer, get a hammer and a chisel like i do...

You can download coolbits which will enable you to overclock with the Nvidia control panel. Download the latest drivers and install them. Then download coolbits and double click on the registry file. You should be set to overclock. You could also download power strip, and use that because coolbits dosent always push your card to the limit. Make sure the card dosent get too warm.
