I've had this CPU along w/ Asus P4XP-X mobo for months and considering overclockin' the thingie.

:)

So what exactly do I need? i.e. Headsink, Ramsink, Mobo settings, etc...

Please if you did this before let me know. Help out some n00bs here! Hehe.

Hi there. I dont know if you have a p4 2.4 b or c but if you have a c then you are a lucky camper. Im running a 2.4c on the Asus p4p800 and have successfully overclocked it to 3.12 gigs with no extra cooling and it never runs hotter then 38c.

Just use the Asus built in overclocking tools in your BIOS and upgrade in small incraments and you should be fine :)

Its so Fast :)

There is a lot to learn if you want to safely overclock your system. More than can or should be described in one single post. I would suggest spending some time @ Extreme Overclocking Forums to get a good feel of what you should do. I learned a ton of stuff there when I first got started.

Good Luck!

If you just want to see the change overcloking can do. Run what ever benchmark program you have and mark the points you get on a piece of paper, txtfile etc.

Go to the bios and hop The frontsidebus=FSB up 5MHz this should be safe in any given system with any given cooling.

Run the benchmark again and see if it made a difference.

The power increase will be minimal, but notable. I hope seeing the change will intrest you in reading a bit more. Dont raise the FSB more for now. When you read some more you'll know how to go for more.

WARNING!!!
Before doing ANYTHING else. Meaning ANYTHING. Find the jumper or switch that clears your CMOS/BIOS in your motherboard. You can find it in the manual of the motherboard.

If (and when) something goes wrong and the computer won't boot up. Use the jumper. if that wont help take the battery found on the motherboard out and unplug the powercord then wait for a few minutes, put the battery back and put the power back on.

I suggest reading a lot before doing anything, but if you insist on trying...

Amazing, hard to believe, 38C with a processor running close to 100 Watts with no extra cooling. Like to know the room temp when you CPU never exceeds 38C.

Assuming your room temp is 20C (quite cool) and CPU tops at 100 Watts, the C/W of your cooling will be:

100 watts x 0.18 c/w + 20 C room temp = 38C.

Let me know where and how to get a 0.18 c/w heatsink/fan, please.

Hey Real_Cool. He's not joking. I have same setup except mine is running 3.201 GHz and mine also NEVER top 100 F. Ambient mobo temp is ~84 F. My house is always kept at a cool albeit comfortable 70F. Whether I'm playing Raven Shield for a few hours or pumping out spacecraft in 3DsMAX 5, it stays cool under pressure. Guess its just time to go for a P4C eh>? :)
