i need to know in your opinion and ONLY AFTER READING MY SPECS what should be the various voltage, freq, misc values i should put in my bios to acheive an o/c of 3 ghz or more??? I AM A NOVICE OVERCLOCKER WO WANTS TO GET IN FULLTIME

what in ur opinion will be the highest o/c i can get???

SYSTEM SPECS:
P4 2.4 CANTERWOOD 800 MHZ BUS PROCESSOR
P4 STOCK COOLING FAN(LAPPED WITH ARCTIC SILVER 3 PASTE TO PROCESSOR)
ASUS P4C800 DELUXE MOBO(4 RAM SLOTS)
1 GB KINGSTON RAM PC3200(256*4)
1 80GB SERIAL ATA SEAGATE HDD WITH 8MB BUFFER
THERMALTAKE XASER 3CPU CASING WITH 7 COOLING FANS.
360 W THERMALTAKE POWER SUPPLY
ELSA GLADIAC 920 GEFORCE 3 AGP DEFAULT CORE/RAM CLOCK IS 200/460 MHZ...CAN GO TO 245/565MHZ (LAPPED WITH ARCTIC SILVER 3 PASTE)(I KNOW THIS CARD IS OLD BUT ITS MY BABY TO ME)

ANY MORE SUGGESTIONS TO IMPROVE MY PERFORMANCE WILL BE VERY WELCOME

MANY THANKS FOR READING

A new keyboard with a less sensitive caps lock key would be a start. Very difficult to read your system credentials.

All you have to do is go in to the bios and turn up the fsb 1-2mhz at a time and test it with 3dmark2001 or 2k3 to make sure it doesn't crash or anything.just keep going up as long as your temps are ok at load or until it crashes.. if it does crash then just turn the vcore up to the next setting..try again if it still crashes turn it up some more, but try looking to see how far other people have gone with the vcore for your cpu. vcore= heat so watch your temps. also if you keep having to turn the vcore up and it's still not stable it might be your ram is oc'ed too far..cause your ram speed goes up with your cpu speed. so you can turn up the vdimm a bit(ram voltage) or turn the ram speed down to the next setting. if it's still unstable it's just your cpu or m/b can't go that far. if you wanted better performance you could get ddr433 or 466 but i see you got 4 256mb moduals of ddr400, i think 2 512mb ddr400 would of gave you better performance..then you would have space to update to 2gb ddr400 if you wanted to. aslo another seagate 80gb sata v with raid 0 would be good, you should be able to get to 2.8 2.9ghz easy with air stock cooling, with water you could get to 3.2ghz probably.

Kev and Mike,

I've heard of 3.5Ghz on air with this thing.
Don't remember which motherboard though.

Yeah, but if you don't watercool everything and use a Radeon 9800 Pro or better you won't touch my 2500+ Barton. Sorry you got suckered in to a P4. Is there still time to return it?

What is it with people how hard is it to admit intel has the fastest cpu. a 3200+ is only equal to about a intel 2.8ghz 800mhz fsb..of course you'll get a better 3dmark score if you have a 9800 pro but not a better pcmark cpu score(big difference). intel has the fastest cpu out, without water cooling. just go look at the top 3dmark or pcmark scores you'll see inel cpu's for like 10 pages until you get to amd cpu's. if you got an intel cpu you didn't get suckered into anything except extreme speed. i can get my p4 3.06ghz to 3.8ghz on air..then the temps get too high.

Infact all you probably need to beat your system is a 9700pro with a p4 2.6ghz. no offence or anything man, just the straight up facts.

Cmon bass, I'm an AMD fan too but from what I hear about the 2.4 it'll oc like the 1700+.
Wanna see a 1700+ run all over your 2500+?

This is the best comparison I've ever seen of amd vs intel is Zroc's thread in the link below, and the rule of thumb the whole thing boils down to is that xp 3ghz = p4 4 ghz given equal L2 cache and fsb.

So the 3200+ which is 2.2ghz is equal to a p4 at 2.93ghz, meaning intel has the advantage in stock cpus. As for overclocking, there are many 3.5g-3.6g p4s out there but few if any 2.6g-2.7g bartons, so the p4 is winning on that front as well. As for cooling, some of these P4s are doing it on stock cooling with very little overvolting. Hats off to intel for all of this, being the better stock performer and the higher overclocker and requiring less cooling in the meantime.

The amd advantages are threefold: their cheapest cpu (1700+) can oc to same relative performance as any of their other cpus, they are cheap even aside from that point, and the unlocked multiplier does not tie you down to expensive mobos and memory which you do need to properly oc a p4 since fsb is the only oc vehicle on a p4. So one brand is clearly number 1 and the other is clearly trying to make up for it in price, except for the stock 3000+ and 3200+ which are insanely overpriced.

If you made a chart of cost = y-axis, and system throughput = x-axis, and only put on the chart the best overall values at each system throughput level, amd would comprise the beginning 90% of this chart with intel making up the upper 10% where amd can't perform well enough to even get on the chart. However there would be a steep jump in price when you move from the top performing amd system to the intel part of the curve.
