I will be getting a water cooling system soon and as soon as I get it set up I plan to overclock my processor. What would be the best way to do this? I've heard of multipliers being locked and such and I'm not really sure what I should change to overclock it.

Your cpu's multiplyer is locked so the only choice of overclocking you have is to raise the FSB.You should be able to go rather high with your fsb(memory permitting)using water cooling.

huh?

You've never overclocked before & you're jumping right into water cooling?

2GB of RAM? What are you using this thing for?

Why didn't you just invest in a better processor & overclock using air cooling like the rest of us? Well, most of us anyway...lol.

BTW, as Custom Built made reference to...your RAM will probably be the limiting factor in your overclocking success. Short of getting new RAM (PC4000 for example), you may have to run async (CPU at one bus speed, RAM at another) to make your water cooling investment worthwhile.

I actually do need the RAM. I work a lot with Maple and I have, on more than one occassion, run out of RAM, even with the 4GB pagefile. Thanks for all the advice. One more question though: you mentioned running async... how would I do this? If I can't do this, what are effective means of cooling my RAM? Each stick of RAM has an individual heatsink, so should I look into getting some sort of fans that I could mount over them or what?

Also, I forgot, if I did get new RAM, would my P4C800 Deluxe support it? If so, would this even make a difference?

To run async, there'd have to be a setting in the BIOS...usually called CPU:DRAM ratio or something like that. If you check the link posted by Sabertooth, you'll find references to running at 1:1, 5:4, 3:2. For example...if you were to set the CPU bus to 250mhz (1000FSB) & the ratio to 5:4, your RAM would run at 200mhz (DDR400)

I could't find any ratios like that in my BIOS, but there is an option for overclocking in increments of 5% up to a maximum overclock of 30%. I'll start out with 5% and work my way up. I already have Prime95--I've been running it for a long time and actually have a PrimeNet team. I'll just have to get memtest. I still want to know whether or not my P4C800 Deluxe would support PC4000. If so, would this even make a difference?
