I have an Asus P4P800S mobo with the Intel 848 chipset. I'm overclocking my P4 1.6 to 2.1GHz and it's working just fine. The temperature doesn't go above 53C under torture test. The thing to do is look in the BIOS. My mobo is designed for overclocking but yours might not be. Also, my P4 (Willamette) is locked. In other words the CPU speed is 16 times the CPU external frequency and cannot be changed. So with the CPU speed at 100MHz this gives an internal speed and FSB of 400MHz with a memory speed of 266MHz. I was able to overclock it as the memory I have is 333MHz so after boosting the CPU to 2.1GHz, the memory speed is now 333MHz and the FSB is 533MHz. Altogether this boosts the speed of the combination about 1.6 times. This example shows the things you have to consider when overclocking. Best of luck.

Bryan

Yes, you want to make sure you know what you are doing before overclocking it.

there are many things you have to keep in mind like.

The higher the processor speed is the higher the voltage setting have to be.

You also have to adjust the FSB speed and clock multiplier

Make sure your ram can handle it. DDR 2700 and 3200 are a safe bet, but I would suggest DDR 3200 just to be on the safe side.

Get an overclocking heatsink and fan. Don't always trust stock heatsinks and fans because some of those stock heatsink and fans are basic cooling fans and if the processor is ran at higher speeds that stock heatsink and fan may not cool off the overclocked processor correctly and burn the processor up.

But before doing all this make sure your intel board will allow you to overclock, because a lot of intel based motherboards made by intel will not aloow you to overclock because the clock settings are detection locked for that type of processor and the only way you can get a faster speed is to buy a faster processor. You don't see overclockers buy intel based motherboards for that reason.

But if your intelmotherboard isn't intel based and made by someone else then you will be able to overclock.
