I'm wondering how I can overclock my amd 3500+, no real reason other tahn curiosity and to make battle field 2 load faster (hopfully)

My current specs are...
AMD 64bit 3500+
2 gb of Corsair ram
Asus A8N-SLI deluxe motherboard
geforce 7800gtx graphics card
Truepower 2.0 powersuppy

Temps at the moment
processor 34c
mainboard 36c
power/aux 28c
GPU 54c

If you need any more information i'll try my best to get it, i'm also running 2 19" LCD's if that matters at all.

Thanks!

Your motherboard is definitely the one for overclocking, as well as your processor.
your temps are ok as well for that purpose.

Now, since you don't have experience in overclocking, I would recommend you read a few articles that really go in depth. I can post later if no one else does first.

Now you want to overclock to make battlefield load faster; I don't think overclocking will neccesarily give you a significant increase in load times, because game loading has to do with variables such as textures, colors etc loading into the memory to be utilized by your video card.
My guess is that you can overclock your video card. Now your GPU is at 54C...is that at idle or load? 54 at idle seems high, I could be wrong, but I would say that I gained alot of performance (doom 3) by overclocking my Radeon 9550 from 250/200 to
460/280. This included the need to remove my stock HSF and apply Artic Silver and reseat. My temperatures don't exceed 50C at full load however.

Yeah my idle GPU is 55c, I havent added or changed any heatsinks or anything since I have put my computer together. How can I get my temp on my GPU lower? The gpu is the...processor on my vidoe card...right? I'm a little fuzzy with what a GPU is to be honest.

I was thinking about buying a Silent 939 for when I overclock - I'd rather not destroy my 3500+.

Also, what is Artic Silver? I've seen those types of "glue/liquid" whatever - but i'm not sure what they do, and where you apply them. Would you mind explaining that to me?

Thanks guy, I really appreciete all this help.

Ok....55 is rather high for a GPU..and yes, it is the Graphics Processing Unit..the CPU of the video card.
This has to stay cool, to achieve max stability and to enable headroom for overclocking. At that current temp, I couldn't imagine the temperature when gaming,
let alone, overclocking temps while gaming may damage the chip. Zalman has a good reputation for VGA coolers, I would look into that company, though there
are other good companies.

When you say a Silent 939, do you mean a HSF? I have the Thermaltake Big Typhoon...and I've overclocked my 1.8GHZ Sempron 64 to 2.5GHZ....700 MHZ,
with more headroom to go, and my temps actually DROPPED 20C. Now my max load temperature is 41C with 100% processor usage! It is in my opinion one
of THE best air coolers for CPUs. (fits all current sockets)

Artic Silver 5 is a highly favored thermal paste. I'm sure that it is conductive, in other words it conducts electricity in addition to transferring heat, so it has
to be used very carefully and minimal, to avoid short circuits on electric componenets. Visit www.arcticsilver.com for application guidelines..
I use Arctic Silver and it dropped my temps by 3-5 C prior to the "break in" period. Ceramic paste is also an option if you fear damaging your mobo/CPU with
conductive paste...as it is not conductive..but the heat transfer is arguably less.

I know a lot of enthusiasts use Arctic Silver & swear by it, but if you use anything other what AMD approves, it will void your CPU warranty. Same goes for the HSF.

The A64 runs cool anyway, plus it has built-in thermal protection circuitry similar to the P4. It's virtually impossible to overheat one to death. The stock AMD HSF (especially the one w/heatpipes) along with the AMD approved thermal pad works quite well. Check out Lazyman's review:

If this isn't the HSF you have, you can find them on eBay for about $20 shipped. HeatSinkOutlet.com was selling them even cheaper (about $15), but they're currently out of stock. Right now, they only have the stock aluminum one for $9 shipped.

^pic of temp and game running.

Anyway it never went above around 76c when I was gaming which was under half of the top threshold.

Anyway i'm definitly going to get that artic silver, and a silent 939. Hopfully that will help. Also is there anything else I can do to keep the heat down?

Thanks guys, soon I will be overclocking!

It's unnecessary, but if it will make you feel better to spend your money, knock yourself out
