Hi there,
i know im going to sound like a madman but i have an old p233mmx and an aopen ax59pro motherboard (super socket 7)
this board support up to 112mhz fsb and a 5.5x multiplier. i know that when i ran aida32 on my comp it said that my cpu was running at 280 (112 x 2.5) and it said the maximum speed for my cpu is 500Mhz. Is it really possible to go this far becuase ive heard stories of people ocing from 1.8 > 9GHZ!!!!!! can i oc my p233 to 500?
im wondering because i want to play gta3 on my comp and i got a new hdd and memory (1.0GB) so can i oc my p233 or should i just waste money on a new k6-2 or k6-3?

Thx in advance!!!

I presume that the '9GHz' for overclocking a cpu is a typing mistake as this is completely impossible!
You have got 1GB memory to go with a p1 cpu????
If you have the money to buy this kind of ram then forget about overclocking this very old cpu (and definately forget about the K6-2, K6-3), source yourself a new MB and CPU.
I recommend the P4, although I know many now prefer the AMD's.

Don't sink too much money into that old rig...it's not worth it.

The old VIA chipset only caches 256MB but only if you have 1MB of L2 cache...if you have 512k of L2, it only caches 128MB of memory. If you exceed these amounts, you'll seriously hurt the system's performance.

Go with an AMD K6-2, either 128MB or 256MB RAM (depending on L2 amount), & get a decnt video card. The Radeon 7000 sucks! And "downgrade" your OS to Win98SE.

If you really have to improve the performance of that system, you have no better option than a K6-3 or a K6-2/3+. Jam has mentioned the cacheable memory chipset limitation. Any of the three CPUs I just mentioned will overcome this because of their on die L2 cache, which makes the motherboard cache L3. But I believe the max memory for the MVP3 is 768 megs. I would recommend shopping for a K6-2+ 450 on Ebay. But even a K6-3 400 (around $15.00 these days) would be a big improvement over the present CPU. But an old KT133 based Socket A motherboard (much less a KT133A or newer) and a 750 Duron would smoke any Socket 7, and would still allow you to use your RAM.

With the popularity of the Socket 754/939 platform, people are unloading their Socket A CPUs and motherboards for cheap these days.

I always seems to forget about the K6-3 & K6-2+, but what repo man says is correct...those CPUs have onboard L2, so it does away with the board's cacheable limitations

Darin,

Sorry, but don't expect to play any relatively modern games on your machines. There just isn't anything you can do with them. All the hardware you have might be marginally able to do the job but you'll be disappointed with game play.

The advice above is sound. BTW, there is another AX59Pro with K6-2/500 on ebay right now for $9.99CAN. The auction ends in about 17 hours and the seller is in Edmonton. Might be something to look at;

Are you still at 2.0x100Mhz or have you tried anything higher yet?

hey skip im presently running at 2 x 112 but im wondering whether to upgrade to 2.5 x 112 which would be 280Mhz but will this need a core voltageincrease?
i dont wanna blow my mmobo I heard its a really good one ;)
anyone would i be able to put an athlon 2400 or 2600 (266Mhz) into my k7sem mobo? i know this mobo is really cheap but id love to be able to play gta vc and quake 3 on my comp:) i love to play first person shooters so could i use this setup:
Athlon xp 2400/2600 (266FSB)
384MB PC133
ECSK7SEM w/ via chipset???
ATI radeon 7000 AGP 4x
20GB hdd UDMA /66
Would this processor work?
Thx in advance!!!

Get rid of that video card! If you wanna play any games decently, you need a better card.

And there's not much to be gained by running your MMX at 280MHz. If you decide to try it, you'd probably need the vcore increase...2.9v is safe. Personally, I wouldn't go higher than 3.0v, if it doesn't run at 280MHz @ 3.0v, be content with 2 x 112MHz & look around for a K6-2.

And upgrade your video! lol

Hehe,

Hell jam, I recommended he not go past 2.9v. That's too nice a motherboard to take chances with. The Aopen people ran it at 2x112 and 2.5x112 without obvious problems but said they didn't guarantee anything. 2x200 is so much better at 2.8v than most ever dream about on a Socket7 board that I'd be very happy with that and never consider raising vcore. I'm thinkin' 2x112 should be a cakewalk though.

I'm not sure if the K7SEM will run a 2400+ but I know my MSI K7T Turbo2 board will and it will overclock to 2600+ TbredB speeds. That, combined with an overclocked 9600se runs FarCry and CoD on medium settings with no problems.

My experience with the K7SEM is limited to two machines and I had serious problems with both of them. Doesn't mean the board is really a hunk of crap, just means it ain't the best one out there.

Bottom line is to try and keep this old stuff working without spending much money on it. An ATI based 9550 or 9600 non-pro card will let you get the most out of you rig and still give you a working video card to transplant into another system later on.

I happen to run a 9600se but, don't buy one...or any other se card. A few bucks more will get you a real video card.
