I was interested in overclocking my Toshiba Satellite M50-YK4 Laptop to increase performace. I was also interested in Overclocking the video card which is an Intel Extreme 2 Graphics with 128 MB DDR Shared. My laptop runs fairly cool right now but how far would i be able to push it for maximum performance without frying any components. My CPU is a Pentium M 1.73 Mhz. Any further info needed plz ask. And before you guys kill me for getting this laptop for any gaming what-so-ever i just want you to kno i got it at a discout at 1450 and the reg price is 1799. I am well aware it is not a gaming laptop but since i am stuck with it i want to try maximizing performance. I will upgrade RAM as well to compensate for the loss due to the shared video card. How much RAM would you also reccomend?

Laptops are designed to vary the speed of the CPU...that's how they preserve battery life & keep the temperatures down. If you were to check your CPU speed while doing various things, you'll rarely find it running at 1.73GHz, except under extreme load. If you're not concerned about temps or battery life, I believe there's a way to set the CPU to run at full speed all the time.

And I've never seen a program designed for overclocking onboard graphics...one may exist, but I'm not aware of it. Even so, what would be the point? Intel's Extreme 2 graphics suck for gaming...if you speed it up, it will just suck a little faster...lol

Even if you could, which you can't you would burn it up. Laptops aren't made for this. And it sounds like you haven't done it before either!

Well since you guys put it that way i was wondering if it owuld be better to exchange this laptop for a compaq. It has Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 Ghz processor, ATI Radeon Xpress 200M IGP With 128MB (which i heard was one of the best integrated grahpics cards), 2000 Mhz bus speed(as opposed to 533 on my toshiba)and everything else is prettu much the same or very similar accept the monitor on the compaq is 15 inch. Would it be wise to exchange for the compaq qhich is 200 dollars cheaper is gaming means anything to me? Is compaq reliable at all?

LOL why wont anyone answer the question. Anyway thanks for everything. Ill just keep my toshiba. I am not willing to sacrafice more money for a heavier, bigger laptop. It does play a lot of games good enough and when i upgrade the RAM i am sure i will be happy with the end result. Take it easy guys.

Not the questions refering to overclocking because that was answered. It is not worth it. My other questions were dedicated to improving the little performance best I can. How much RAM should i upgrade 2? How do find out how much ram i have allocated towards the Graphics Card. Is there a way I can change that to allocate more. And my other question was about the compaq but i changed my mind on that like i already mentioned.

Laptops are what they are...they don't offer the flexibility of upgrades that desktop systems do. Onboard graphics suck for gaming...there's nothing you can do about that. Allocating more RAM may help it to suck a little less...lol. Check your BIOS to see if you have the option to do so...if it's already set at 128MB shared, I believe that's the max, but that would mean that your system is running on 384MB. Adding more RAM would help overall performance.

Your machine has 512MB of non-removable RAM & can be upgraded to as much as 1.5GB

just to further jam's feelings a bit....why would you want to allocate more memory towards your integrated graphics? All it will do is take away from your total amount of system memory AND it will have to use more of your system memory's bandwidth also, if you are going to be playing a graphic intensive game, it will also be using your cpu alot, which will use your system memory and bottleneck when it tried to use the same memory for the graphics. yeah...this is the reason people still customize their desktops for high gaming performance...mobility has its limits...umless you want to fork about $4,000+ out for an XPS notebook....if someone wants to correct me for what i said...e-mail me...by the way Matt, i feel your pain a bit with these Toshiba notebooks, i think they have more potential, if only someone wold write a program for this new centrino stuff...also, if anyone knows of any specialized stuff for i915GM chipsets...let me know @ wjcollier07@charter.net

Toshiba Satellite M45-S265
Intel Pentium M 730 1.6 GHz (yes i know...)

Pent 4 2600MHz OCed to 3195MHz 23% SEVERELY UNSTABLE OVER THIS

and my beloved toshiba...
