Hey folks, just got a new computer and networked it to the old one for multiplayer, but the old CPU isn't really up to the job. Does anyone know if it's feasible to OC the athlon 1800+ XP on a Soltek SL-75DRV5-C (T 1.8 BIOS) to something vaguely useful by today's standards? Tried to sift through some of the posts here but not much of it makes a great deal of sense to me. Am I right in assuming I'd need some sort of additional cooling?

As far as the cooling goes : no, you don't
(I still use the Heatsink and Fan that came
with my CPU's reatail pack) unless, however
you plan an extreme overclock.

I'll let Skip, Jam and YO help you with
what to do as they know am infinite amount
more than me ;)

Before I forget, the BIOS has RedStorm 2 but every time I run it the system hangs and when it restarts it's defaulted to the old settings. I've tinkered around with the CPU Frequency adjust, but that seems to make most 3D and video applications very unstable (GeForce 6800 GT 126, Forceware 66.93 - wasted on this processor I imagine, but I got it cheap from a friend without an AGP slot...)

Hey Zee, thanks for the vote of confidence.

johnmedgla,

1st of all, we need to know if your 1800+ is a Palomino or Tbred, & whether it's locked or unlocked.

Have a look at these articles about your board:

Thanks for those, though I'm not certain what they mean. Palomino and Thoroughbred mean very little to me, but AMD's CPUID says the following:

Processor: 0x622
type : 0
Instruction Family: 6
Model: 2
Stepping: 2

Processor 0x762
Generation: 7
Model: 6
Stepping: 2

Is this good or bad.......

sorry, but only the onboared you wont make it any gaming comp. The onboard video will be a bottleneck even with your curecnt speed.

and jam, I was running benchmark tests on the sempron2400 and the athlon2000 with 100 and 133MHz core speeds and the results seemed a little funny and confusing. I will make a seperate post tonight to call you attention..and yes am buying a thermal paste today :). my temp as I type this is 44C.
johnmedga, sorry for hijacking your thread :)

download the file and unzip it. {the file i mean ;) }
Run the file (program) called CBId.
You will see the CPU information appear on the screen. Look under "extended information".
You will see a "processor core" identification. Tell us what that says.

Thanks Kailas, 'Tis a Palomino, which I gather is the older (and less preferable) of the two...

Yea, Model 6 = Palomino core. The Palomino is definitely locked, so that takes any multiplier adjustment outta the picture. You could experiment with the "pencil trick" or one of the other methods that will unlock the multiplier though.

Your 1800+ is designed to run at 1533MHz, 11.5 x 133MHz (266FSB) @ 1.75v. The high default voltage of the Palomino means they run fairly hot, & raising the voltage to stabilize an overclock usually means it will run hotter. A good HSF, thermal paste, & adequate case cooling are important.

Before you start, do you know how to recover if your system becomes unbootable? Are you familiar with BIOS settings & how to Clear CMOS to reset the BIOS? Do you have the manual for the board?

PC2100 RAM is gonna limit your overclockability. From what I read on those links that I posted, your board uses a DIP switch to configure the FSB. You should have 100, 120, 133, 140, 150 and 166 MHz available. I highly doubt you're gonna hit 166MHz, so you're only other choices are 140 or 150. 140MHz is a safe bet...you shouldn't have to raise the voltage, your RAM should be able to handle it, & your PCI speed will only increase to 35Mhz. Your CPU speed would be 1610MHz.

150MHz is a little more "iffy". Chances are, you'll need to increase the CPU voltage, possibly the RAM voltage too, & your PCI speed will jump to 37.5Mhz, so you may encounter problems with your PCI devices, your video, & your IDE devices. That would put your CPU speed at 1725MHz, if you can pull it off.

Ideally, you'd wanna unlock the multiplier so that you could run the CPU at something like 10 x 166MHz (1667MHz), but you'd need PC2700 RAM.

Not as easy as you thought, huh?

Actually I was just fumbling around in the dark. Thanks for your help though, I'll try to find a good source of these cooling supplies in the UK. Cheers!

Be aware that the FX6800 has an issue with 1 of the 'Forceware' drivers!

Not sure which ones but when I find out again I'll post back.

I have a Tbred 1800+

And a Gigabyte 7VT-600L VIA KT-600 motherboard

I have had success bumping it up to 1750mhz, but not sure if I should increase the cpu power .5% to keep it more stable?

It says Unknown cpu type
