Subject: Overclocking AMD Duron 1300OS: Win XP Home SP2CPU/Ram: Duron 1300 (Morgan)/512MBModel/Manufacturer: Compaq Presario 5003R |
Comment: I was wondering if there is anyway to overclock an AMD Duron 1300 CPU in a Compaq Presario 5003R? I know how to unlock the L1 bridges, but I'm not sure how to find the settings to overclock the CPU in the BIOS. This is a new motherboard, model: FIC AZ31 ATX made for Compaq. The Duron 1300 I bought new because my old processor "kicked the bucket" on me. Anyone have any clues where the settings would be, or if there's a way to overclock it within XP Home SP2? Thanks. TERK If it ain't broke, screw it up so you can fix it.

Reply: (edit)It aint gonna happen with a Compaq. There's most likely no way to increase the FSB, no way to lock the PCI/AGP, & no way to adjust voltages. You could try software such as ClockGen but the max safe FSB without locking the PCI/AGP would be approx 112MHz...& you may not even be able to hit that stably without a voltage increase. Even if you can pull it off, it would only put your CPU at 1456MHz & I highly doubt the difference would be noticeable. The big drawback with the Duron is it only has 64k L2 cache & THAT is a peformance killer.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the info. I know how to overclock Intels, which is NOT advisable, and I'm saying that as a an expert on most computer related things. AMDs are kind of foreign to me, I have used them, but haven't delt much with trying to max oput the performance of them. If I can only get it to 1456, that's not enough for me to even try to overclock it. ANd I knew the L2 Cache was a little low for overclocking as well. But I figured I'd ask someone who knew more about AMD than I do, which is not much. I use Intel mainly, due to the fact they're in the computers I get at a low price, which are either older, or not very good performance wise. Now I know why they got rid of them! lol. Thanks a lot. If it ain't broke, screw it up so you can fix it.

Reply: (edit)Basically, the heat cracks didn't survive the pound or 2 of silicone. There was an underlying thing why it cracked. It must've gotten too hot. I don't have that problem now. I put a brand new heatsink and fan on the new cpu, and no problems yet. Just a little laggy. May just be the lack of ram, and the slow bus speed of the cpu and memory. All in all though, it runs Vista without any problems, just a little slow. But yea, no secret fix for the heat cracks. So I finally threw it away. I tried it in my new mobo I bought, and it did the same thing. Now I have 2 good working mobos. lol Oh well. The mobo only cost me $10 on eBay. Find me a $15 processor/heatsink combo, and I'mm have another working AMD box. Sweet. If it ain't broke, screw it up so you can fix it.

Reply: (edit)I am sorry, but I have to call BS on your assertion that your -- Duron 1300 (Morgan)/512MB PC133 -- system runs Vista "without" any problems. What are you running -- Vista Starter?

Reply: (edit)I said it was slow, but no other problems. I am running Vista Home Basic. Trying it out on that one before I put it on my main computer. If the Compaq will run it, even though it's slower than crap, it'll run on my main computer. So you can say BS, but I am here, I know what is going on with it, and if you don't believe me, you don't have to. You have your version of what may be true, or may not be true, and I have the truth. If it ain't broke, screw it up so you can fix it.
