If you already have a CPU cooler...use it & monitor your temps...you may or may not have to replace it. Remember that the Tbird runs hot, so 40s at idle isn't unusual.

I believe your CPU is unlocked, so you can experiment with both the multiplier & FSB. I checked the specs...your board is based on the KT266 chipset & the max "official" CPU speed is 1400mhz, so I don't know how much better you're gonna be able to do. You'll have to check your manual to see how to raise the FSB (BIOS setting or jumpers?) & what setting options are available. Depending on what speed RAM you have, it may hold you back as well.

Basically, it's trial & error...

DAMN! How high did you set it? You're supposed to raise it in small increments...maybe 5mhz at a time!

Now you're going to have to reset the BIOS. Before you start, make sure to unplug the power cord...then, either use the ClearCMOS jumper (check your manual), or remove the "coin" battery from the motherboard for a minute or two. Replace the battery (or change the ClearCMOS jumper back to it's normal setting) & boot up...then go straight into the BIOS & correct all the settings that have reverted to their defaults

Lol, some mobos also come with a safe-guard to reset FSB settings if it goes tits-up, hold "Insert" down when you reboot.

Some people are like Slinkies?, not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs...

WOW! thank a lot! the battery trick worked!
heheh.. my normal FSB speed is 133.. and i set it to 164, the highest possible, so that wasn't realy smart.
But do you think it does work in smaller steps then, like 5mhz at a time?

Ok, that works.. now i have 1.5GHz instead of 1.4 :):)
but what is a good temp for a AMD Athlon?
My temp are now: CPU: 52 C and System: 40 C
Is that ok?

Not too bad, now test it out under load, play an intensive 3D game for 10 mins and check your temps again straight away.

Ok, i've played farCry for about 15min and checked my temp right away:
CPU: 59 C
System: 46 C
Is that a temp to live with?

Just. Any higher and you could experience crashes, but if you do, just lower it back a notch.

Get yourself a nice fan and heat-sink though, and you could raise the GHz a lot higher.

Well.. I've heard AMD Athlon's can still opperate with a temp of 90°C!!
So i think i can tune it a litte more.
Except there's one problem.. when i get above 1.55GHz it wont let me start windows anymore:(
is it an protection or somethink like that?
if it is, how can i turn it off?

Your system temp is too high...how many case cooling fans do you have? If you can bring that temp down, the CPU temp will drop as well...it's difficult to cool using warm air...lol

What speed RAM do you have? PC2100 is designed for 133mhz, but should be able to handle 140-150mhz. Like I said, it's all trial & error.

If your system is locking up above 1.55GHz, you can try raising the CPU voltage...stock is 1.75v...but you could try it at 1.80v, or 1.85v, but the higher the volts, the higher the temps

Well for cooling i've got the PS fan, another fan above it, a CPU cooler, a fan under my HD and one at the side of my case.

I got 2 RAM speeds.. 2x 256MB PC2100 and 1x 512MB PC2700.

Where can i find CPU voltage in the BIOS? i cant find it anywhere:(

1. You are constrained by the PC2100 memory. The faster PC2700 has no effect on your efforts.

2. If you can't lock the pci/agp bus to 33/66Mhz, you ain't goin' any further.

3. Most MSI boards (expecially older ones) only clear bios settings with a jumper. Removing the battery also works.

4. 1.55Ghz is a pretty good overclock. If you have no video or pause, lockup etc. problems with FarCry at medium or better settings you're likely ok. I happen to think that you should back off a little from where you are now. After two years of overclocking efforts on the same motherboard with two different processors and two different video cards, I'm back to default settings and undervolted instead of overvolted. 42°C vs 53° with no real loss of performance and the ability to clock my videocard even higher than before. Dead stable too.

Each system is different but going after raw Mhz usually does less for performance than we hope for and creates higher temps and seeming unexplained problems, pauses, lockups and so forth.
