Hello, ive been able to overclock my amd athlon 64 fx from 2.2 to 2.4. but im not sure on its stability. I am able to play several rounds of ut03 with no problem, i run 3dmark and aquamark with no problem either. I downloaded this program called CPU Stability Test. And everytime i run it, the computer crashes. I was wonderin what the core voltage default should be and what core voltage i should put it at to keep it at 2.4. I have sufficient cooling with a koolance Exos liquid cooling system. all help is appreciated.

Whenever the system fails stability test (Prime95 is the toughest), the system will give you problem in random. Few people overclock the system in assuring stability being key factor, others overclock to the highest unsustainable speed so that they could brag. Yet, they won't tell when the system crashes or lockup.

If your temp is not an issue, I'd suspect memory not being able to match. Come back and let us know your result as there aren't many AMD users willing to pay top price for processor here.

That is right when I think I have overclocked my pc I make sure it runs 100%stable at that speed. I like to run toast over night that gives me my highest temp, and also makes sure my pc will not crash.

well, im gonna run prime95 asap. Does anyone know the core voltage rating for this processor??? and im usin the sk8v mobo and i cant put my vcore settings above 1.550. Isnt that a bit low!?

1.5 is a really low vcore for socketA but I don't know about 940socket

It says here that 1.5v is the default vcore

http://users.erols.com/chare/elec.htm

increase it within bios under advanced >jumperfree. Go with the lowest vcore increase that will get you stable. I'd also try keeping it at 1.5v and seeing if its stable outside of the stability test, since you're not going to run that program normally anyway.

If more vcore does not help then try more voltage to the memory instead. Its right below the vcore offset also in jumperfree

that stabalized it. i changed the vcore offset then i lowered the vcore because the voltage was almost at 1.8!! so i brought it down to 1.68. im wonderin if i should just push it to 2.5 or more?

there is never a danger with pushing it as far as it can go as long as you

do it gradually,

and make sure temps stay in the 50s at worst.

What is the highest temperature one should let the processor reach? I have the stock fan and heatsink and have the bios set to the following:

CPU FSB: 217
VCORE: NONE
DDR: AUTO
AGP 1.5
V-LINK: 2.5
Performance: Turbo 1

This gives me a speed of 2401MHz.

At idle the bios reports 49C. The ASUS Probe reports 40C at idle in windows. Which should I believe?

After running UT2004 Demo for a game the ASUS probe reports max temp as 53C/127F.

Everything seems stable.

In a nutshell, I am wondering how far I can push the overclocking without risking too much heat. When aftermarket fans become more readily available I'll upgrade.

you vcore cant be none, go back into bios and look at hardware monitor and it should tell you the vcore there, my cpu now doesnt go above 38c, if its hitting the 50s, you should begin to worry. just slowling raise the voltage and fsb until it reaches a comfortable level under full load (50tops) and then back of a few MHZ. Im using water cooling, i modded my exos to have a dangerden radiator and 2 120mm fans, i also hooked up 1/2inch tubing and a swiffy mcp600, very nice cooling.

Sorry, I should have said the VCORE OFFSET is set to NONE. Thanks for the reply :)
