Hey Guys,

I don't know jack about overclocking a computer and was wondering if you could point me in the direction of a good page that explains the process. I just got a new machine and was wondering if overclocking would be worth doing. Does it really make a significant difference in performance? I'm not a gamer, so that's not an issue. Here's my specs:

Custom build
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor
Gigabyte GA-K8NS-939 Mobo
Nvidia Nforce3 Ultra chipset
Winchester 5939 core
Radeon 9200 128 meg video card
512 megs ddr400 pc3200 RAM.

Any suggestion are welcome and appreciated.

Thanx
Grasshopper

By the time you're done reading through this, you'll feel a lot more confident and if you have any question along the way just ask and someone will answer if jam does not get to it first.

Note of warning !!!, overclocking your system may require procedures that void manufacturer's warranty on some components involved.

personally, i don't encourage you to overclock your pc right now. especially you're not a gamer and this is your first attempt on overclocking.(that's too good a pc to be mingle with) most people overclock to achieve higher fps in games. i believe your pc is good enough to run most applications(except gaming) at max. speed. you won't notice much(if any) different by overclocking it. what about your old pc which you replaced with the current set? you should try out on it first to get a hand of it and when you're more confident, then should you consider overclocking this new built.

anyway, if you still insist on overclocking, my last advise is to increase fsb or clock multiplier but not cpu voltage.

I am not into gaming either but there is a certain amount of fun overclocking just to see how much more you can get out of your machine. If you wanna read alot more about overclocking your Amd64 try going to the overclockers forum.

Man i have a similar motherboard (K8NSNXP-939) and it's pretty tolerant for mucking things up when you overclock you would have to try pretty hard to stuff that system with all the sensors and alerts/reboots etc.

Gigabyte K8NSNXP-939
Athlon 64 3500+ @2450
Dual -
Corsair TwinX CMX512-3200XL
Gecube X800 XT Platinum
Seagate 200 Gig
Coolermaster Wavemaster Silver

HotShot,

No offence taken, BTW overclocking must have some unofficial blessings from the CPU maker because it is further proof of the processor's capabilities.

Hey guys,

Thanx for all the replies. I think I'll let well enough alone for now. Maybe I'll play with the old machine. I see Jam made it :)) The only improvement I'm gonna do is put in (2) 512 meg memeory sticks from Crucial, that way I can utilize the dual channel feature of the Mobo. Once again, thanx to everyone.
