Hi, I've recently considered overclocking my Intel Celeron (2.22ghz clock speed) while I'm waiting to get enough money to build a new PC. However, I have a few questions.

Overclocking raises the tmperature of the CPU, right? At the moment my CPU runs at around 44.00 celsius when using everyday applications, and about 48.00 celsius when using processor-heavy applications. (The CPU went as high as 55 celsius before I cleaned the CPU fans, but that's unrelated). If this matters, my motherboard temperature is about 36 celsius.

So what's the highest temperature you reccomend overclocking too? I don't want my CPU frying.

It won't fry...it can't.

Without knowing what motherboard you have & what BIOS settings are available, it's tough to give much advice. If you can't lock the PCI/AGP bus at their default speeds, your ability to overclock will be severely limited.

If you want a faster system, add more RAM.

Just checked my BIOS, and there's an option for 'Top Performance'. Turned it on, and Windows wouldn't get past the login screen. So I assume my processor/mobo is so old I just can't optimize it :P

I have a Gigabyte GA-8SIMLH motherboard btw.

Choosing "Top Performance" is NOT how to do it!

You have a board based on an SiS chipset, so I wouldn't expect miracles.

Go into the BIOS, Frequency/Voltage Control menu...set the "Linear Frequency Control" to ENABLED.

CPU Clock - adjustable from 100MHz~355MHz. Increase a little at a time (5-10MHz) & see how far you can go before the system becomes unstable. Make sure to save you settings after each change, reboot & get into Windows. If all appears well, go back into the BIOS & bump it again...continue until you run into problems.

DRAM Clock (MHz) - either set to AUTO or to the speed of your RAM. 266 for PC2100, 333 for PC2700.

AGP Clock (MHz) - set to 66

PCI Clock (MHz) - set to 33

Top Performance - set to DISABLED

There doesn't appear to be any voltage adjustments, so that will hold you back. It's all trial & error from here...
