Hi. I know this seems quite unreasonable but I want to overclock an old 486 DX 66 Mhz PC to be aboe to run some software on it. I don't know whether this is possible or not. It's a pakcard bell PC. I will be glad if this thing can be done.
Thanks
Joseph

I suppose anything is possible, but why? In the UK a P2 base unit can be sourced for a tenner!

On those old things all settings are done
with jumpers.
First of check the manual if there are such
jumpers for FSB, multiplier and maybe VCore
(cpu voltage).
The problem is that those firms like
packard bell often used oem boards that had
all those jumpers removed so you wouldn't
be able to change the settings.
If you have those jumpers check which
settings are possible. If it allows a
higher FSB try it. You can also play around
with the multiplier if possible.
Just try to do it in as small steps as
possible because taking too much can damage
the cpu. If the system runs unstable at the
higher speed a small raise of the Vcore may
help but be careful there.
And always keep an eye on the cpu
temperature.

Yes it's possible. The 486 66MHz is 2 x 33 MHz, you may be able to make the multipler from 2 to 3 (jumpers on the motherboard) but this would make your PC VERY unstable
have a look at the jumpers with some values near them. what's the highest multipler ? 3 ? 4?
how about the highest BUSS speed ?
there should be 25, 33 ... can you see 50 ? 60 ?
now multiply the highest of two numbers
I think you should be able to run a DX2 120 mhz (2 x 60) or DX2 100 Mhz (2 x 50), I don't remember if there was a 2 x 66 = 133 mhz.
I upgraded my old mitac dx2 66 laptop to dx4 100, you can buy a dx4 cpu in almost any antiques shop now :)
hope that helps
computing.net rocks

lol
yes its all done with jumpers i would go for 3 x 33 if you have them would not take it further unless you have a bigger heat sink
Get Firefox

If it's a Packard Bell, you're lucky it's running at all. Don't tempt fate with that old dog!
You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users
