Press del when your machine is starting up, go into the BIOS and see if you can change your FSB speed or multiplier settings.

1st) do you have good cooling. You need to check you cpu temps often. If its getting too hot it will lock up or worse just die on you. Check your cpu temps in the bios. Also check the ambient/case temparature.
You want your case below 35degrees celsiu and your cpu should be below 45 degrees celsius. If it goes past 60 you might have big trouble. Add fans etc to cool your rig.

2) You can usually adjust your FSB fronside bus. Whatever it is as the default you can usually jump it up by 10 or so and test it out. Than by 5's and later by a point a run.
Adjusting FSB affects the cpu and your memory speed(mhz). Check for temps and check your ram to see if its getting hot.

3) You might have to adjust your voltage. If your computer is slowing down and is not hot and your ram is ok than you may need more voltage to help with the higher speed setting. Depending on your settings you should be able to up to 10% higher at max. exp: Slowly raise and test/check temps. Be very careful you can fry you cpu and than be SOL.

4)Go to madonion.com, glexcess.com, etc and get some basic comp tests to check system under load.

5)Good luck
