hi, i have a p4 2.8ghz northwood cpu and i want to know what is good about overclocking. How can i overclock my cpu? i have 512mb pc4000 500mhz hyperx ram. and an intel extreme graphics II vid card(which i think sucks)i have windows xp. my mobo is made by intel and has the865g chipset.
ANY HELP??

"what is good about overclocking"
the same thing that is good about going 90 miles an hour.
1) its fun
2) there is some risk and risk is good
3) it gets you there just a moment sooner(3 is not much of a reason though its what we may say is the real reason)
do a google search on
overclocking abcxyz
where abcxyz is the model of your motherboard

Overclock is the way that you increase the external clock on the motherboard which is supply to the CPU to make the CPU run a bit faster. Well, depend on the mother board you have so you can overclock or not (if your motherboard allow you to increase the clock). Some old motherboard using jumper to change the clock frequency, nowaday they use bios to change the clock which allow the user to OC more flexibility. One main problem about the OC is the heat. You have to watch your CPU temperature to make sure that it does not go too high and the stable of the system. There are vary of motherboard which allow you to OC, but if you have intel motherboard, sorry NO.
Goodluck

Overclocking can be fun, if you know what to do. Do a search for the hardware specs of your motherboard. include the brand name, revision number, and model number in the search. once you find them, look to see what the maximum processor speed can be for a northwood cpu. once this is found out, reboot your computer. as it boots it will show your processor FSB and multiplier, it is normally on the top line after the speed it was "designed" for. it will look something like "Celeron 2.60 (100x26)" (all you need to worry about are the numbers in parentheses) the first number is your FSB, the second number is your multiplier. get a calculator and go into your BIOS settings[normally press DELETE]. once there, go to something like "Frequency/Voltage Control". enable the manual settings feature. sometimes you are able to change the FSB and mulitiplier, sometimes just one or the other can be changed. anyway, mine was only capable of FSB changing, so I changed mine from 100 to 109, increasing my processor to 2.83GHz (109x26=2.83...), only slightly over my maximum. so as you can see, overclocking is possible without putting your computer in danger. if you can change the multiplier, it's easy, if you can change the FSB it requires a calculator, if you can change both then its a snap. just try out different formulations on your calc, adding one to the FSB or whatever each time, until you get the highest speed the mobo can handle. you can go a little higher, because usually processors are designed to run a little faster than it states on the box (for example 2.60 means 2.63) so dont be worried if you go a little over.
