Reply: (edit)It is virtually impossible to overheat a P4 to death...it has built in thermal protection circuitry. If it gets to hot, it slows itself down, it's called "throttling". That's probably what you were experiencing. Simply cleaning the heatsink would have fixed it. If you can't play games after formatting the HDDs (why would you format both?), & reinstalling the OS, my guess would be you forgot something. Maybe a driver? Possibly the motherboard chipset drivers?

Reply: (edit)Take a look at the thermal paste my p4 3.0ghz overheated about a hundred time till i figured out why. The thermal paste got toasted and was flaking off like burnt paper. couldnt hurt to check it before buyin a new cpu. Nothing's broken until you choose not to fix it.
