Subject: old comp..CPU upgrade?
OS: MEPIS linux
CPU/Ram: celeron 500MHZ socket370/
Model/Manufacturer: hp
Comment:

i use my 8 yr old hp fer web surfing/email/txt editing..but its performance still leaves much to be desired. i have sufficent ram (384mb) but proc is only a 500 mhz celeron, mendocino core, 66fsb, socket370.
im looking to buy a cheap used p3 off ebay, but i dont know if itll be compatible. i know the fsb for the p3's are 100/133, and im hoping to get a 133 one.
Question 1: will a 1gig p3 w/ fsb133 be compatible w/ my mobo (there is only one 'socket 370' right?) and run at 66fsb, to make clock speed of 500mhz?
question 2: if so, is a 500mhz p3 going to make much of a difference from a 500mhz celeron?
question 3: any other suggestions, aside from a 1 gig p3? (will not be buying new mobo/etc, just looking for a cheap, drop-in upgrade)

uhm..sorry for the long post.

Before doing anything, go to the HP website to see if you can find the specs on your board....or open the case, find the model number, then google the number. It's very possible that your board only supports 66MHz FSB, so dropping in a "1gig p3 w/ fsb133" would only run at 500MHz anyway, IF it would run at all. You'll also have to look into the available CPU voltage options.

Do your homework before making a move....

P3's use a whole seperate socket. Infact they use a slot type thing. I think a p4 would fit, but i might be mistaken.

p.s. I am also looking for a new cpu to replace my celeron which runs at 500mhz.

P3s used both slot 1 and socket 370..

1) there's no way of knowing compatibility without checking the manufacturer's website for documentation..

2) no, it's going to be a waste of money

3) if you want more speed, you aren't going to really be able to get away with a drop-in upgrade..a system that old is starting to show its age pretty well..you can build a new machine that will be much much faster for not a lot of money..

HP's and other major brands are not meant to be upgradable. They are what they are. You can just believe this, or spend some $$$ and find out the hard way.

You are going to have to find out what chipset your motherboard has first and then find out what CPU's it will support. I had a HP with a 566MHz Celeron and replaced that with a 1.1GHz Celeron from a dead computer and it ran perfectly. It has a 100Mhz FSB and I think even 256Kb of L2 Cache, much better than the 566Mhz It replaced. If your board supports a 100MHz FSB you should be fine. I think the Socket 370 Celerons went to 1.3GHz. Good luck.

You can try powerleap.com. They have a
celeron that runs at 1.2ghz and pent-3's
that run at 1.2 or 1.4ghz's.

Appreciate the responses, thanks.

I think a better idea would be to stick w/ the 66fsb, and so look for a celeron instead. did a lil search on wikipedia, and found a 766/128/66..(coppermine core)

compatible?

so diff btween
500mhz celeron/500mhz p3 < 500mhz celeron/766mhz celeron?
[since p3 has larger cache, diff architechture..]

Only the motherboard manufacturer can confirm. YOu can try what you want, but absolutely no guarantees and it may be an expen$ive lesson.

This is all the manufacturers info i found for my comp..
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=59927&lang=en&docname=bph05258#

got an info sheet on the 810 chipset..
http://developer.intel.com/design/chipsets/mature/index.htm?iid=ipp_810chpst+hghlt_chart&

Im not sure what it means when it says '100/66 ' fsb under the 810 chipset..does that mean it supports both 100 and 66 mhz fsb's or that there are 2 types, 1 for ea. fsb speed?
Even if the chipset supports 100mhz fsb, is it possible that the mobo is configured not to?
any thoughts would be appreciated.

If it says 100/66 FSB it probably means it supports both. The HP I have also has an 810 chipset. So you should be able to go to any of the 100MHz FSB Celerons or P3's.. I think P3's went to 850MHz under the 100MHz FSB.
