Subject: OC'ing AM2 6000+ into 6400+OS: xp proCPU/Ram: 6000+ 3ghz/2gbModel/Manufacturer: - |
Comment: I have a stock 6000+ CPu right now, I've seen CPU-Z screen captures of the new 6400+ and it makes me wonder, judging from those screens and a CPU-Z readout of the 6000+ they look like they're identical in specification, apart from the name and the fact the 6400+ is 200MHz faster. Does that mean the 6400+ is merely the 6000+ overclocked by 200Mhz? In which case does that mean rather than me buying the 6400+ as an upgrade I could just OC my 6000+ by 200MHz and then I'd essentially have the 6400+ (just not in name)?

Reply: (edit)No, it means the 6000+ is a 6400+ that didn't make the grade...lol "rather than me buying the 6400+ as an upgrade I could just OC my 6000+ by 200MHz and then I'd essentially have the 6400+ (just not in name)?" Obviously shelling out close to $200 for a 200MHz increase would be a complete waste of money. If you have a capable board & know what you're doing, overclock the CPU & RAM & you'll have better than the 6400+ ;-)

Reply: (edit)Why are you going to overclock it anyhow? It's not like you will see a real improvement that you will see over the 6400+.

Reply: (edit)So I could tell my pals at work I got the 6400+, at least I'd only be half a liar if I had overclocked it. Heh heh. Added to which, the real reason is I feel a bit done by AMD. Basically I got the 6000 for 100 quid some months ago when AMD did those price cuts on there line of processors. Then they went and released the 6400, but I really haven't been paying any attention to what's new ever since I got my 6000. So when I went onto the e-tailer I generally buy stuff off and saw the 6400 for the same price as I bought the 6000 a few months ago, I kind of felt a bit gutted that I didn't just wait and get that one. Then I saw the specs and figured they're the same processor. So i said to myself "overclock it and you've got yourself a 6400.. in essence."

Reply: (edit)Well they have the Quad Core Phenom X4 processors out now which are even faster then the fastest Athlon 64 X2's. So you are never going to catch up. That's technology for you. By the time you buy something, it's either already out of date or half priced the next month. That's why you get what you need and not what you don't, because it's a losing battle that you will never win. OCing the Athlon 64 6000+ to a 6400+ is a waste of time, because you won't see a diff in performance. Besides that, your cpu is more then fast enough to throw just about anything at fine as it is.
