Comment: -AMD Athlon XP 1900+ @ 1.6Ghz -Asus A7N8X Delux w/ nForce 2 Chipset -evga GeForce FX 5500 OC to 390Mhz Core, 520Mhz Mem. -40 Western Digital HD Yeah, I know its old! I was wondering how I might go about Overclocking my Processor? Or if I even could with this board? Ive OCd my GPU but thats a completely different thing to this. I was hoping to up it to 1.8Ghz or possibly 2.0Ghz. Is it possible? How would I go about doing this?

Reply: (edit)You've got a good board for it. What speed RAM do you have? PC2100 isn't gonna cut it. Is the CPU multiplier locked or unlocked? Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8 x 210MHz 512MB PC3200 Asus Ti4800SE 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro

Reply: (edit)Well, I do have PC 2100 running at 266MHz (133x2). How do I tell if the multiplier is locked or not? Im very much so a noob at OCing so please be patient. I take it it is somewhere in the BIOS?

Reply: (edit)Checked in my BIOS, the CPU Frequency Multiplier has two settings, [Auto]which its currently at, and [manual]. Beneath it is the manual setting tab, since its set to auto the tab is greyed over. But it reads 12x. I take it this is the standard setting?

Reply: (edit)Sounds like 12x is the default CPU multiplier, eg 12x133=1.6Ghz. An unlocked multiplier is handy because you can increase the speed of the CPU without bringing up the speed of your RAM and PCI devices etc. When I tried setting the multiplier to anything other than the default on my 1600+ XP it wouldn't bring up the display at all. If you want to give it a go, be ready to clear the CMOS to return to default settings (unplug power cable, find cmos jumper and usually you move it along one pin for at least 10secs; or just pop the battery out for 10secs). If locked, the Front Side Bus speed will be your other option for Oc. Eg 12x150 would yield 1.8GHz (if your ram is upto it, and PCI/AGP is locked or @ reasonable ratio). Have fun :) P4 LGA775 3.0GHz 2x256Mb DDR2 533MHz XFX 6800GT PCI-E

Reply: (edit)The advantage of an unlocked multiplier is so you can LOWER it, not raise it! Overclocking by raising the multiplier only increases the CPU speed...this does little or nothing to improve overall system performance. You have an excellent board for overclocking...it has ALL the necessary BIOS settings. You can lock the AGP at 66MHz...that will also take PCI & IDE devices out of the equation because they all run on the same bus. And for best performance, you should run the CPU & RAM at the same bus speed. Unfortunately, you only have PC2100 RAM, so that will hold you back. Have a look at my settings below...my board is very similar to yours. I have an 1800+ which is designed to run at 1533MHz (11 x 133MHz). Luckily, I have an unlocked multiplier & PC3200 RAM, so I'm running it at 8 x 210MHz (1680MHz). The overall CPU speed increase isn't all that much (less than 10%), but the difference between 133MHz (266FSB) & 210MHz (420FSB) is significant. Reply: (edit)Before doing anything, download CPUZ v1.28 & find out exactly what CPU you have http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php#download Find out if you have a Palomino or a Thoroughbred & what voltage it's currently running at. Check the motherboard tab to find out what BIOS version you're running, & check the Memory & SPD tabs to find out what your current memory timings are. Report back & I'll recommend some BIOS settings to get you started Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8 x 210MHz 512MB PC3200 Asus Ti4800SE 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro
