Hi,

I just got a new CPU-cooler and my temp dropped a big number so i tought i could OC my CPU some more.. (it already was @ 11,5 X 215MHz) since i can't get my FSB higher because of my 400MHz memory, i raised the multiplier to 12X, and the Vcore to 1,825... at first it was doing ok, temps were never above 52c @ full load, got some more frames in games, and was perfectly stable in prime95...

But then i encounterd a strange problem with FEAR... The game overall was a little faster then before, but in some places in the game the FPS suddenly dropped... when i look away from that area the frame rate is normal again, i never had this before :(
So is this some kind of securty down-throttling feauture in my AMD??
If so, how can i turn it off?

Secondly, i noticed when i cold boot the machine... it would not post and the videocard was not recieving power so i had a blank screen..
So i hit the reset button and it will boot fine.. but when i was in windows it said my CPU was running @ 601MHz?? so i restarted and went in the bios but there it was still @ 12x215MHz.. so then i exit the bios, rebooted windows and it was @ 2,59GHz again.. strange..
Now i have to do this every time when i could boot it:(

Why??

Thanks in advance.

Because you have a mobile CPU, it auto adjust FSB and multiplier according to the usage of the laptop. For example, when user is afk and set to "portable laptop" in the power scheme, the CPU auto adjust itself to minimize the power consumption. As soon as the user start to open a game, then the CPU jump back to full speed when the power is needed. What I would do is the right click on desktop -> properties -> screen saver -> power -> change power schemes to "always on". Now your 601Mhz should displayed as 2.59Ghz. If not, then go into the BIOS and look for any power saving feature that auto drops speed when idling... Finally the 52C your getting, is that from the BIOS or from a software? Sometimes software readings can be off upto 10C difference compared to the BIOS and I would touch the heatsink to verify the temperature is around there...

Things you can do to bring down the CPU temperature

1. Buy a pure cooper heatsink with high CFM fan
2. Add artic silver 5 as you install the heatsink
3. Lap the cpu and the heatsink to a very smooth surface (highly not recommand unless you know what you are doing)
4. Improve air flow in the case, i.e 1 fan below HD sucking in air and 1 fan below power supply blowing air out
5. Make sure your cables are wrapped so it doesn't block air incoming or outgoing fans...

Thanks for the reply..

Well i know i have a mobile CPU but when i had it clocked @ 11,5 X 215MHz (so 2,48GHz) i didn't had all these problems from above..
It's just the small change of setting the multiplier from 11,5 to 12, then i got all these problems..
I also never experienced it clocking down in idle mode, it's just on cold boot..
On second boot it's fine again...

I'm also pretty sure my temps are correct, software and BIOS are giving the same temps.. and, i even tried an analog probe, with same results.
Like i said, i just got a new cooler (Gigabyte G-Power) wich is working perfectly.
Also, got a thermaltake kandalf, wich has brilliant airflow.

If you are using the AXP 2500+ in a desktop CPU, PowerNow should not kick in based on your default Power Scheme Options.

Unfortunately you may have hit the threshold of Windows ability to sustain a stable overclock at that FSB with the 12x multiplier. If that is the case, a newer cooler is not going to help you.

Another thing is your PSU, is it chocking ?

What motherboard/chipset do you have ?

Did you also lock the PCI/AGP bus ?

What do you mean by it's a windows threshold?
You're trying to say that windows can't support a multiplier of 12x??

What's "chocking"?
I have a OCZ modstream 450W for PSU...

And my mobo is a Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe with NForce2 400Ultra chipset

And offcourse i locked the PCI/AGP bus:)

Thanks again.

The 2500+ has a stock frequency of 166MHz (333FSB) with 11x multiplier, now you're up to 215MHz (430FSB), do you seriously expect Windows to run stable at just about any multiplier & frequency combination ?

There are other factors too that may make or mar your max overclock besides voltages and cooling, the board or the BIOS is another one.

BTW, since your board had a PCI/AGP lock that takes care of the bus corruption issue.
