Hi Everybody! Just a small question.
Last time I've got a PC( build by myself).
Intel D845WN,P4 1.5Ghz/ 400FSB/ 256 l2 cache, 512MB SDram. I've just upgrate to ASUS P4P800-SE, 2*256MB DDR400 Kingmax, ASUS A-45GA power supply and reuse the old CPU. Because my budget is no more. I've tried to increase CPU speed to 1.8Ghz(120*15) but failed. The system hang during startup. Now system run at 1.65Ghz(110*15).
This is the first time I overclock my PC so pls help me.

I would like to increase my PC speed more, any suggestion?
Is it the limition of Pentium4 willamet that cause overclocking failed at 1.8Ghz?
Thanks alot!

Even though you have DDR400 RAM, there's no point running it at 200MHz if the CPU is only running at 110MHz. For best performance, the CPU & RAM should run at the same bus speed.

Make sure to lock the AGP/PCI at 66/33MHz.

Disable Spread Spectrum.

Increase the CPU FSB a little at a time (5MHz), reboot & test for stability after each change.

Increase CPU voltage (vcore) only if necessary to stabilize the overclock.

Thank you very much for your support!
I know that Although I have DDR400 module, the memory bus only run at 266Mhz(PC2100).It is just because my budget is no more. I intend to get a Pentium4 3.0Ghz/FSB800 CPU to combine with Dual channel DDR400 and HT tech so before that I want to try something with the old CPU.

And I'd like to know: How can they remark CPU and How to recognize these?

Any help would be appreciated!

If the CPU you bought is retail, then its harder for seller to remake them w/o taking apart the box... But if the CPU you bought is OEM, then they will remark the CPU by removing the old text off the CPU, like 3.0Ghz SLxxx to higher.. I'd seen some website, they selling a Celeron 1.7Ghz and remark them into Pentium 4 3.6... So what I would do is to download "cpu-z" and check out whether the CPU you got is actually a Pentium 4 1.5Ghz.. Usually remarked CPU has darker text on the CPU than the others and I would suspect whether the CPU truely exist, like Pentium 4 Northwood 3.6Ghz (obviously 3.4 is the max for Northwood... etc)

I saw that link and it was nothing more than an allegation of shady company's misconduct. You can't make blanket assertions about OEM components based on something like that.

If counterfeiters love the $20.00 denomination, should we then avoid the bill altogether ?

Back into the old days where Pentium II was popular. If you still remembered what happen to the Pentium II 300Mhz SL2W8 CPU and the Pentium II 266Mhz SL2W7, both capable of raising from 66 to 100Mhz FSB w/o any voltage increase, if the seller wanted to remark them into Pentium II 450 or Pentium II 400Mhz, how difficult it is for them to do so? Think about the giant profit they made for doing this... I'm not saying this happen to all OEM, I'm saying this happen to some CPU... The OEM CPU never had any box to protect itself from fraud. The seller can buy this CPU, overclock and then remark them into higher level. This do not often happen in the US, but quite common in Asia...

You can buy OEM CPU with 100% confident, but there is still a slight chance that CPU can be remarked...

If counterfeiters love the $20.00 denomination, should we then NOT avoid the bill altogether ?

Not all Willamettes are the same. I have two - A 1.6GHz made in the Philippines and a 1.7GHz made in Costa Rica. They both have 256KB cache and 400MHz FSB. The 1.6 O/Cs perfectly and I'm running it at 2.1 GHz with a 533MHz FSB. Doesn't get any hotter at idle and only gets up to around 48C under torture test. The 1.7 will not run under the same conditions but resolutely sticks to its proper clock rate. You just have to pick the right one.
