I would like to know if I put some higher rated ram in my computer would I be able to overclock to higher speeds? I was looking at either GeIL 1GB DDR433, or US Modular 1024MB PC4000.

I am currently running Mushkin 1GB kit Pc3200 on a MSI K8n Neo4 Platinum.

If I cant overclock farther with faster ram how could I overclock to higher than 2.7?

It depends whether your cpu or your ram is the bottleneck. You can get ddr500 (pc4000) ram to have a fsb of 250, but if your cpu can't handle it, then you need to run a lower fsb.

Use the biggest ram speed divider (3:2 or 266 mhz ram). This will run your ram as slow as possible. Then increase the ram up to fsb 300 (that's the quickest your pc3200 ram can run at that divider without being overclocked).

Note what fsb you can run without stability. Then, get the ram speed that will let you run at 1:1 (400 mhz...ie synchronized). So if you can run 250 fsb fine, then get pc4000.

all that said, if you wanna run at 250fsb ur gonna need a vcore increase. Does ur mobo permit that? what about cpu fsb/dram ratio changes? like 3:2 4:3 5:4 etc.

abit is7 i856pe
Prescott 2.8ghz @ 4004Mhz 286x14
FSB @ 1144Mhz
512x2 in dual config @ 430mhz
9800 se unlocked & clocked @ 444mhz/800mhz

I was in the bios looking for the option to change the divider and didnt find one. I did notice that my ram is only running at 200MHz. The closest thing to ratios i found was the "Refresh Period (tref)" and It will not go to 1:1. the lowest it has is 1:1.55.

As for Vcore, I can change that and other voltages such as ram and the Nforce4.

Thanks

I've got my new A64 set up on it's way and before I bought it, I did a lot of research on OCing the A64 and what I've found is that high quality pc3200 is the way to go for ocing. That was confirmed by a lot of differant reivews I found.

you will hit a bottle neck if you ram bus and fsb aren't at a 1:1 ratio.

I dont see a place to change the ratio to 1:1 What would it be under? Would it be in with the timimgs? Here is what the options are in the DRAM Configuration section: Memclock index value, CAS# latency, Min RAS# active time (Tras), (Trce), (Trp), (Trc),(Trfc),(Trrd),(Twr),(Twtr),(Trwt),(Tref),1T/2T timing, Read Preamble Value,Async Latency Value, S/W memory hole Remapping, and mTRR Mapping mode.
