OS: WinXP SP1
CPU/Ram: P4 3.06ghz/533 FSB/1 gig
Comment:

I just recently bought a P4 3.06ghz (533 FSB type) and an ASUS P4G8X Deluxe mobo. Im wondering if my running temps seem normal to every1, since to me they seem a little on the high side. On system idling, according to ASUSProbe, I have 49C on the CPU temp, 39C on the mobo temp with a CPU fan RPM of around 3400.

When running a game, CPU temp rises to about 56-58c and I believe the mobo gets somewhere around 44C and CPU rpms rise to like 4200.

Are these numbers normal for a P4? I thought the P4's ran slightly cooler then AMD xp's. Also I have a Kingwin Triple fan 450w powersupply, a small front case fan sucking new air in. For peripherals, i have a Radeon 9800 128 Pro, 2 HD's DVD and CD burner and a SB Live.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Oh one more thing..it was a retail P4 so im using the intel sink and fan that came with it. Thermal paste between CPU and sink, not a thermal skin layer

Those temps look about right for a 3g p4 with the stock cooler.

P4s are hotter than XPs at full load. Note that the amd and intel stock heatsinks are adequate, but are on the verge of inadequacy. Intel has used the same stock cooler for a while now, but amd has recently gone to a copper sink as its stock barton sink.

A cpu burns some constant watts and some variable watts, one due to the static current supplied as the core voltage and the second due to the effort the cpu makes operating under load. That is, even when its doing nothing at all, like in dos or in the bios menu, it burns watts through usage of static current.

Amd and Intel are opposites in this area. A P4 turns off the static current to various parts of the cpu that are not presently being used, whereas in an amd xp cpu, all the lights in the house are always on. The result is that P4s are cooler at idle but may be hotter at load.

You might not have good case ventilation..you might want to leave the side case off. also if your using the themal paste that came with the cpu get some artic silver 3.. i lost 5-6c when using as3 compared to the other stuff. and make sure you only put a thin layer.. very thin, too much will make the temps go higher. and if you want a good hsf get the thermaltake spark7+, it's got a copper base and i'm getting a temp of 33c at idle stock speed(p4 3.06ghz) before as3 it was 37c 38c! that's with ambient temps of 18-20c, and a xaser 3 v2000a case with 11 fans in it.

Wow 11 fans inside? Whats the noise level like? The thermal paste I used (very thin layer of it) was the stuff that came in the P4 retail.

P4 3 Ghz and higher begin using copper base heatsink. The variable fan speed with sensor is what you are experiencing with fan speed changes. This new HSF is much better than the old one. But, the base finish can use lapping to make it better.
In fact, case temperature or system temperature could be the problem. Depending on room temperature, 39C is a bit high unless room temp is over 28C.

It's not all that noisy. But i don't care about the noise anyway.
