Hi, I've recently made my first attempt at building my own a computer, but now I have some issues that I can't quite work out.

1. Noise: I tried finding parts and fans that were said to be quiet, but it seems that my CPU fan (came w/ cpu) is where a lot of noise comes from. at idle, my CPU is sitting at 46 oC and the fan is ranging from 5800 to 6000 in speed. Should I change some settings or do i need to look for a quieter fan/heatsink.

2. General Slowness: By my understanding, there is no reason for my PC not to be running fast, but it just isn't. I guess what i'm wondering here is, after having put everything together and starting up, what kind of things need to be done to get optimum performance (not overclocking, just for general performance)

3. Online Slowness: Similar to the last problem. The internet is much slower on my new comp than my old one.

Any help with these problems would be greatly appreciated, and you'll get a warm fuzzy feeling from helping out a beginner like me

If you arent planning to Overclock, 6000RPM is unecessary...Get one somewhere below 4000RPM and it should be much quieter

You built this computer? What parts did you buy? General slowness is usually caused by crappy RAM or processor, but you could also have malware/viruses

I...Hate...You.

AMD 64 4200+ 939 pin
Asus A8N - SLI Deluxe
dual evga 6800 gt's
2 Corsair DDR 512MB Value Select's
Maxtor 250 GB SATA hard drive

I'm pretty sure I've installed all the necessary stuff from the motherboard's support cd and i've installed the graphics card drivers from the cd that came with them.

Hmm...Yeah I really don't see a reason why those parts wouldn't work...especially that athlon 4200...
What do you do that causes it to slow down?

I...Hate...You.

are you using the same browser as before? Internet browsers actually are a factor in internet browsing speed. If you have a High-Speed Internet, I would get Firefox and enable pipelining, it is much faster than IE and a lot of other browsers.
What do you mean your computer is running "slow"? Do you mean slower than you thought it would be or is it freezing or crashing or something like that? Go into your system properties and make sure that the CPU is in fact the speed it should be (2.2Ghz). Sometimes motherboards will revert to default clock settings when a new CPU is installed. The clock settings should be at 11x200. If you want to tune windows XP for max performance go to performance go to www.tweakxp.com

Build-in-Progress:
NZXT Nemesis Elite
Athlon 64 3200
Abit An8
OCZ EL PE Rev2 DDR400
X800PRO
