Hi,

I recently have bought a computer with 3.0GHz P4 800 MHz FSB.

Some more details on specs, haven't put everything here:
ASUS P4C800-E deluxe motherboard
4x 512 OCZ Platinum PC3200 DDR400 RAM
ATI Fire X1 G1 256 MB video card
2 x 36GB Western Digital 10,000RPM drives, 2+0 RAID stripe
160GB IDE HDD for backups
Antec 550 W Power supply

I don't have the greatest knowledge of hardware, but I use lots of CAD software.

The ASUS P4C800-E motherboard and the BIOS has 'AI Overclocking' where it has a menu to automatically overclock for you.

Anyway I tried 10% and everything is fine, and 20% also .. i ran some games and some CAD software to render large files and all is well.

but my processor is running at 3.6GHz!!
is this safe? ... i also downloaded the program MBM5 and my CPU temp has not gone higher that 51 C, its usually around 35 C when idling in windows.

As long as the temp doesn't go over 60-65c it's totally safe. Only thing is it might crash on you and BSOD, because of instability. If it does it means you need to increase the vcore, which makes it more stable. But the vcore also makes heat so watch the temps if you need to increase it.

You should try using the BIOS for overclocking instead. It's more reliable and you can get an idea of whats really going on more.

If you want you can overclock your video card too, with powerstrip.

Just don't go too far with everything and you won't damage it!

Ok, johnoh I'll take your word for it. But how high can one go with the stock cooling setup?

Wow, 3Ghz CPU, 2GB RAM, 72GB Raid 10000RPM HD, and 256MB ATI card, I'd wish I have one of those. 51C max is your max temperature? Seems to me you still have more room to squeeze. There is not point to overclock when your max temp is at 65C+, cause the P4 will clock down itself so it doesn't overheat. You should try 250Mhz FSB x 4 = 1000Mhz FSB, that will give you 3.75Ghz. Boost up the vcore and dimm voltage if necessary.

There's a guy below who got a cpuid screenshot of 3.8ghz with the stock cooler, though he modded the fan to run at full rpms. Looks to me like 3.5g-3.6g is the usual max for a 3.0c with stock cooler, but you need the right chip to get there.

i noticed that the cpu fan with the 3.0GHz is faster than 2.8Ghz by default. I have computers with both CPUs ... the 2.8 fan runs at about 3000 RPM when it gets hot .. and that computer has gone up to 60C with NO overclocking!

the 3.0Ghz however, the fan is running at about 3000 RPM when idle, will have to check how high it gets under load.

also, i think i'm able to acheive the high speed because the ASUS board and OCZ RAM are pretty damn solid (but quite pricey).
