Newbie here looking for assistance. Want to upgrade CPU on an Intel motherboard. The board supports a range of speeds. The one on the board happens to be the slowest listed. If I wanted to install the fastest CPU listed in the spec sheet, is it as simple as pulling out the old one, sticking the new one and turning the machine back on? Or is there more to it that I dont understand or know. Boy , this really is a newbie question aint it !!!

Thanks
Steve

Thanks

It would help if you gave more info about your system. If it's what you have listed in your specs, adding more RAM *might* be more beneficial than a CPU upgrade.

List the CPU you have now & the FSB speed it runs at, what speed RAM you have & the make/model of your board.

Its a Dell XPS T550, with an Intell PIII 550 cpu @ 100 fsb, 256 ram PC 100/125, running Win 98. I can basically get a faster cpu free- either an 850 or 1.0. I would have to buy the ramm if I went that direction.
So, can I just R&R the cpu or is there more involved with the bios etc ?

Thanks
Steve M
