Subject: new video card for older system
OS: windows xp/linux
CPU/Ram: athlonxp 1700, 512mb
Model/Manufacturer: custom
Comment:
hi all

this is a small, cheap system that i built from some parts, and a friend wants it for a decent gaming computer. here's the current specs

athlon xp 1700+ @ 1.47ghz
512mb sd ram
40gb hard drive
dvd rw drive

the motherboard is agp 4x, so any agp 8x card i get will run at 4x :|

what i want to know is, what is the best agp card i can get for this system where the cpu wouldn't be a bottleneck? i want everything to be kind of on the same page, ya know?

i prefer nvidia because of the linux support, but if ya know of an ati card that's good, let me know! (even if it's like a x1000 series or something or whatever)

Right you are if you think you are

You neglected to list the board & PSU. And what will be the primary use of this system? Regardless, there's no sense in going overboard on a video card for that setup.

If you want an nVidia card, you'll probably have to settle for something like an FX5500 or 6800XT...of course, it depends on how much you'll willing to spend & whether you want new or used. Maybe a 6600GT? Your PSU will have to be able to handle the load of a higher end card too.

On the ATI side, how about this factory overclocked Radeon X1600PRO 256MB for $50:
