New mobo and CPU with same OS settings?

Specs: XP, AMD 5400 AM2, 2GB Co
Hello, my motherboard is shot so I ordered a new one along with a new cpu. I want to keep all of my important data on my HD that I wasn't able to backup. Will I be able to boot up using the same OS settings or will it just give me errors about changing hardware?

Unless you got exactly the same motherboard, you will probably have to do a repair install of XP using an XP CD. That will preserve your data(though it wouldn't hurt to back up anyway) and programs, but you will have to do all of the Windows updates.

Thx. So I just pop in the XP cd and it will ask me to repair, or do I have tp use fancy unix commands? If it is complicated, can I install on a new partition, and once it is installed I can go to My Computer and select my old partition and copy certain files over? Thanks :)
