Hi all,

It just turned into spring here and it's getting hotter and hotter, so also my room temp and my CPU.

I have a AMD Athlon XP Mobile 2500+ @ 2,4GHz (200MHzx12). First it was idle @ ~42c, now it's allready idle @ 47c and it will be alot warmer in summer so temps will soon idle @ 50's and higher.

I don't like that kind of temps so i'm going for a new Cooler & thermal paste, only i'm not sure what to get.

I found this nice cooler for 20,- euro's:
GigaByte Neon Cooler 7 Pro.
Now i'm not sure what paste to get, i know artic silver is very bad for AMD so will GeiL artic cooler work?

ThanX in advance

What's you average room temp? What's your system temp? How many case cooling fans do you have? What's your vcore setting? Are you certain your temp reporting is accurate? Have you tried the "touch test" of your heatsink? Have you considered a software solution to your cooling?

If the temps are accurate, remove the HSF kit, thoroughly clean it out and if you already use thermal paste, wipe off the old grease and reapply a fresh coat.

Take the time to organize your component cabling(s) for max airflow advantage and remove or blow out the crud that may have accumulated overtime on the inside of your case and your motherboard.

Then check your temps again.
Do not type anything in this space.

Well my casetemp is around 22c, i have 5 casefans; two under my HDD blowing cold air in, one side-panel fan blowing air in, and 2 PSUfans sucking hot air out.
My room temp is most of the time around 15c~20c, my Vcore is set @ 1,70v, and i just gave my HSF a fresh coat of paste a few weeks ago.
My cables are all bitween my hdd and cd-drive, not blocking the airway.

See pics:

btw, the reason it's getting so hot i think is because last time i replaced the grease i noticed a small scrach on the copper bottom of my HSF, exactly where the cpu core comes in contact with it.

You're case is under positive pressure (more air coming in than going out). You should try for a more balanced system. If anything, a slight negative pressure is preferrable. Try moving one of those front intake fans to the rear of the case & make it an exhaust fan.

You should be able to polish that scratch out of the bottom of the heatsink, unless it's a deep one. I didn't check xXx-HotShot-xXx's links, but I'm sure that'll cover it.

Make sure to apply fresh paste following these instructions (regardless of the brand being used):

You also need to remember the elevated vcore of your 2500+ will help it run hotter.

About all you can do is insure everything is as good as it can be for the summer season and go for it.

I know that if you lower vcore you'll likely lose the overclock you currently use. If temps are uncomfortable for ya this summer you can always set the system back to default and likely undervolt some for the hot weather. It wouldn't surprise me to see a 8-10°C difference between 1.700v and 1.600v.

Lapping how-to and kits are available here:

My heatsink looked like a concrete freeway on the bottom. An hour with the $4.00 kit was worth about 4°C using RadioShack thermal compound applied iaw arctic silver instructions.
