Subject: new cpu
OS: win98se
CPU/Ram: celeron@500mhz/200mb
Model/Manufacturer: home built
Comment:
I want to upgrade my cpu because it is really slow and video and audio files are as slow as crap. I was wondering about which cpu to get and how fast it should be. I need a cpu that would fit in the same socket as my celeron. I was thinking about a faster celeron prossesor or if I should go with a p4.

neither. go amd.

if you have the 500mhz celery and 200mb ram (i'm assuming shared 256 with onboard video), anything you buy new will be substantially faster..

I doubt you will get a P4 to run on the mystery board, and if it is a branded machine (HP, Dell) i'd give up ANY idea regarding upgrading the CPU.

I don't know the motherboard model. What can I use to find out without taking apart my whole computer.

That's a either a P2 or P3 Celeron; you won't be able to put in a P4. You've got socket 370; P4s use Sockets 423, 478, and 775.

I asked the guy who made it and he said that he could put in a new celeron. He also said that he could not put in a p2 or a p3.

Yea it is worth the price because he said that he was going to put in a 1ghz celeron. Also right now my 500mhz celeron is running pretty slow. Some people might say that 128mb of ram and a 500mhz celeron is good for windows 98, not for me because I play games on my pc alot and half of my games run pretty slow (also because of my video card, but the new prosessor would help a little). The programs I use run slow so that is also why I am getting the new celeron.

If the board accepts a 1GHz Celeron CPU (which run at 100MHz FSB) then a much faster P3-1000 will also work.

I got back my computer and tested it out. It is freekingly fast(for windows 98):). A lot of my programs load faster and most of my games are faster. When I load a video, I notice the improvement. Windows Media Player is faster and the sound quality is better. Thanx everyone for the tips and advice!
