Hi, I just though i might mention a new cooling idea i built on my friends comp. I insulate the case with foam insulation and plugged all the holes...i then bolted a window box air conditioning unit on the side. the comp requires not extra fans cuz the ac circulates the air well for such a small space and it keeps the processor at 30 C no fan just a heat sync.. it a 3.4ghz over clocked to 4.5. We hope to over clock it more since the temps are still so low. the AC kicks in for about 2 min every hour or so. we rewired it slightly so it blower always recirculates the air. it works pretty well if you wan an ice cold case.

I don't really recommand doing that because if the AC were direct blowing into the heatsink and to the motherboard, it may contain moister which will short out the circuits in the motherboard... Thats why they use a robber tube and a special "connector" attach to the CPU so no moister will escape from the compressed cold air... Those are vapochills.... Upto this point, I still prefer air cooling because it is the simpliest and cheapest of all... If you had a good 3.4Ghz chip, going to 4.5Ghz isn't that difficult with air cooling.. I saw a guy had a Pentium 631 65nm Presler core o/c from 3.0Ghz to 4.5Ghz air w/ some ninja cooler and modified chipset cooler... His temperature stay below 49C full load...

yea, the liquid thing was a concern, i though it might be a problem, but we have a humidity meter in there and surprisingly it still shows slightly lets then out side the case. It really dry...we tried it for a while before installing vital electronics in the case. i thought it would be difficult with that much heat to, but the ac really works well, and the insulation keeps it cold. max was 35C while we were gaming on it...and the ac is not even maxed out..were gonna try and clock it to 5.0 or 5.5 if we can keep these temps stable. My friend's dad works for best buy and had some processors they couldn't sell, so basically we had a dirt cheep 3.4 that we figure we will either destroy or build a kick ass fast system. gota bring the rest of the comp up to spec thoug, only a 32 meg vid card and 256 ram...20 gig hd lol..needs some supping up. a shame to run slow stuff with a now 4.7 ghz proccesor.

It's nice to see some one experiementing & pushing the limit, but obviously the setup isn't very practical. How about listing all the specs of this system....what speed is the RAM running at when then CPU bus cranked up to 265-275MHz & beyond...is it still lagging way behind at 200MHz? What motherboard & power supply are you using? And I'm curious as to why you're running a heatsink only...I would think you'd want to keep the fan on anyway?

BTW, I see for your specs you have a Centrino listed. A Centrino is not a CPU, it's the name of a technology package.

If you want to overclock based on FSB, you may want to consider to modify your chipset cooler so it can handle higher FSB... Having only 256mb RAM, 32mb video card and 20GB hard drive, what is the point to overclock the CPU? If you try to play games on it, then you should be considering a better graphic card, more RAM and a bigger hard drive for storage... Otherwise, you will not beneifit much for having 4.5Ghz overclocked cpu + 256mb RAM + 32mb video card + 20gb hard drive and run it under win xp... What kind of games can you play on that 4.5G machine?

The air gives up moisture in the form of condensation as it passes across the evaporator coil, thereby lowering the relative humidity of the air.

So the conditioned air inside the case would be lower in humidity than the unconditioned air. Still in all, its sounds like overkill to me.

i don't have pics lol...I'll get specs next time i see it, its at my friends dorm right now...yea its over kill, but why not, i couldn't get it that cold with water cooling. Also, we are planning on upgrading the rest of the system cuz as tmp-man said, it a waste to over clock if the rest of the system sucks. everyone says its over kill, and it def is, but this was more of a how far can we over clock it and make it run stable then a actual practical cooling system. The reason we disabled the cpu fan was because the air cont unit went into far and it would not fit. The drives had to be remounted vertically as well...power supply barley cleared but we removed the face of the ac to make a few modifications to the controls and vents to make it fit.

You don't hae to upgrade it if you only plan to overclock for fun. But if you want to use it for desktop, then I'd would upgrade that system to 1GB of RAM and maybe a geforce 7600gt+ to pair up with your 4.5ghz P4... (assuming you have PCI-E).. But seriously you are not going to do much with 256mb RAM and a 32mb basic video card w/ that 4.5Ghz system...

we are planning on getting 5 gigs of ram and 3 sweet ass vid cards with 512 or more...we should be able to get some of it cheep if my frinds dad has some that are minorly defective we can get them cheep. We want to hook up 3 high speedlcds for gaming and photo/video editing. video editing is why we want all the ram.

Uhhhhh, how are you gonna install 5GB RAM? For one thing, your board probably has 4 DIMM slots...& I believe WinXP only supports up to 4GB RAM anyway.

Three 512MB video cards? How are are you gonna pull that one off & why would you bother?

Sounds like a "pipe-dream" to me. And I'd like to try whatever it is you have in your pipe...it must be some killer sh!t. LMAO!

I would hope you have a some type of line conditioner, or something equivalent, such as a UPS that regulates line noise. I'm tring to imagine the size of the AC unit, cuz chances are when it kicks on that it creates a dip in electricty, causing a temp brownout, not good for hardware.

You've heard the people. WE WANT PICTURES!!

PS. My next rig will be built inside a mini Ice Box.

lol sounds like fun. please get pics would be great to see lol. and yes i aggre with the UPS suggestion.
and 3 vid cards? most graphics cards have dvi and analog output anyway? so i guess you can run both but u got fast lcds..so ud want dvi or wateva it called. id say you can get cards with two of them aswell?

adjective: broadly or extravagantly humorous; resembling farce
adjective: completely devoid of wisdom or good sense

I believe you are referring to its first definition GX1 Man, being as this is a brilliant idea...
