Anyone have any suggestions? This is my system setup:
asus p5gd2-deluxe MOBO
intel Pentium 4 530 Prescott 800MHz FSB LGA 775 ProcessorI replaced the stock heatsink & fan with a gigabyte rocket and it brought the temps to like 195-220 degrees. Just switched to a liquid cooling system (COOLER MASTER AQUAGATE Mini R120) and it only helped it by like 5 degrees. I have heard the prescotts run hot but I wouldn't think it could actually boil water.
P.S. I am not kn00b and actually install computers/networks for a living. I just never had a processor run this hot on me before.
No way your cpu is running that hot, has to be a temp reporting error. What are you using to monitor temps? What were your temps with the stock HSF?
Just for kicks...try placing your finger on the heatsink while the system is running.

Cause it is an asus MB(good quality). And as I type it is now reading 105 degree centigrade.
Asus probe (is the monitor) and the bios are both reading the same temp. Also when I rip dvds and play high resoltion games it will freeze and shut down.
Do you think I have a defective chip?

If your chip was defective it wouldn't work at all. Although, the prescott does run hot, it's not that hot!
I recommend a bios update, this sometimes fixes temperature reporting issues.
BTW, did you touch the heatsink like i suggested? If you can keep it on there for more than a second, you're not at 105C, not even close.

If the heatsink is not installed properly and not making good contact, you will have high CPU temp and will not feel the heat on the heatsink.

That's not the point i was trying to make lazyman.
My point is this: It's physically impossible for his chip to be running that hot. A P4 will never come close to that temperature, due to the thermal protection built into the core. I don't want to go into detail, as it has been explained to death already in this forum.

Your CPU is not running that hot. What's even stupider is you believing that the processor went up to 220 degrees (!) after you replaced the stock HSF... for God's sake, the thing would be glowing if it were that hot!!
plyduster was right, try a BIOS update.
Also, since your comp is shutting down on games and other high-load jobs, you most likely do have some degree of heat issues. Take off the HSF and reapply your thermal compound. MAKE SURE that you don't just glom it on there... you need complete coverage on the chip but only a thin layer or else your thermal conductivity will be nothing.
Other than that, find a 3rd party temp monitor to back up your ASUS stuff... don't know any in particular, but just Google it.

Forgot to mention, make sure your case ventilation is adequate. Make sure your fans are balanced. For example, if you have two fans blowing out, have two fans blowing in. Keep blowing-in fans up front and blowing out fans in back (PSUs blow out).

I talked to ASUS and they said they see this issue often and it probobly has something to do with the mobo. I got an rma and should see a new mobo in a few days...will keep u posted.
