Subject: Need Help Updating Old Bios?
OS: Windows 98
CPU/Ram: Pentium 100 16MB of RAM
Comment:

Hi,

I know this is not the right forum for this post, but I didn't know where else to go. I have an old computer and I think I may need to update the bios.

The computer has a 234 MB hard drive, a pentium 100 MHz processor and about 16 MB or RAM. The motherboard detects the hard drive in the auto detect feature in the BIOS. However, I can't get the computer to boot into Windows 98 from the hard drive. It gives me an error of "boot disk failure" or "I/O error". I have double and triple checked that the hard drive configuration (Cylinders, Sectors, Landing Zone, etc) are correct. (There is not an "Auto" setting in the "Standard CMOS Settings". Also, I have not been able to boot from another working hard drive from this same computer. I also tried putting the orginal hard drive into another computer and it booted up fine. So, I know it has to do with the bios/motherboard. Can anyone help me? Here are the specs that I found for the motherboard.

Award BIOS version 4.50PG copyright (1984-1995)
Motherboard: Triton-PI-5xtp4-00 (Intel chipset)

I have never updated a bios before so I need some major help if that indeed is my problem here. I have not be able to find any bios updates or websites with details instructions on what to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Check here:

It is easier than it looks to do this correctly. I have flashed over 200 systems so far with only one fatality.

After you find the correct update (exactly your specs),don't interupt the procedure until it is completed and all should go well.

You can go to Google en type;
Highscreen
See the site of the factory from highscreen
You can go directly to the site with;
http://www.vobis.de/bbs/support/
Her you can see a few examples from some bios types

If you had a bios v.5.40 PG whit a line;
PCI/VGA Palette Snoop
there's no example on the Vobis site
I've got the bios printed on paper en if you want i can send it you bij mail.

Give me you'r adress en i will send it to you.

I have an old INTEL BI440ZX motherboard which has BIOS 4B4IZ0XA.86A

It did have version 3 BIOS and I decided to upgrade (lesson: If it anit broke don't fix it). The last BIOS version available for this now obsolete motherboard is version 9. I created the disks and the flash seemed to go smoothly to completetion. However, when I went to reboot from hard drive the PC would not even get to POST. I tried to find an original version 3 on the web but no luck. I thought I had a BIOS recovery disk but for the life of me I cant find it (lesson number two) .

If anyone has an older BIOS version for this BIOS it would be extremely appreciated. Any other advice would be very welcome.

Bob Latimer
