Ok heres whats happened, i just recently upgraded my computer from an XP1800 to a XP2500 and upgraded memory from 2 sticks of Crucial 256 PC2100, to 2 sticks of K-Byte 512 PC2700. I have an A7N8X which supports up to 400mhz fsb. So now that I have my new 2500 and ddr333 ram, i should be able to run at 333fsb. Well everytime I do Windows XP crashes after a while, and games crash. Right now it running pretty stable at 266fsb and downclocked to an XP1900. So I called asus tech support and they told me to repair windows xp. They said that it should be running at 333fsb. They said that it could be either defective ram(which its not) or not enough power. Right now I have a Skyhawk 300W psu. Oya and bios is updated and the 2 sticks are running in dual channel mode(which isnt the problem either). Do I really need a new power supply and does anyone know any answers? Thanks
300W psu (+5V=30A +3.3=20A)
Athlon XP2500
1 gig of PC2700
Geforce3 Ti500
Audigy X-Gamer
DVD drive
CDRW drive
80gig harddrive
4 case fans

I'm no expert, but in other posts people that have similar setups needed at least a 400W power supply.
That's a lot of stuff to be running on a 300W power supply. :)
I'd wait for comfrimation from another person though before getting a new power supply.

I've only got a enermax 350w and i'm fine with 12 fans that i have now 1 cd-rw, 1 cdrom,and a cold cathode. but i'm thinking of getting a 400w one.

Is your power supply a generic power supply or brand name? If it is generic definitely upgrade it. If it is brand name you still probably need to upgrade. 300w is fine for like a 1700+ or 1900+ but no good for the higher ends. Especially if you're running multiple sticks of ram, fans, 13 optical drives, whatever.

Ya ive got a Skyhawk 300W psu. I think it must be the psu cuz i tested each stick of ram on my friends XP1800 computer and it worked fine.

If the psu is up to spec it should power your system with no problem. However you have no way of knowing its up to spec and the recent upgrade could be what put it over the edge. To find out if the problem is the psu try rnuning the cpu at the stock ghz but do so by using a higher multiplier and lower fsb. Run the fsb at 266 but raise the multi. This will cause the system to consume about the same power as it would at stock fsb and multi. If it runs fine, the problem is not the psu.
Then try running the cpu at 266 but the memory at 333, both single channel and dual channel. If that works, the problem is not the memory.
Then lower the memory to 266 and try adjusting the cpu fsb upwards while lowering the multi, always keeping the cpu at stock mhz. If this does not work, the problem is the mobo.

i may be wrong but i'm pretty sure that the athlon 2500 XP is supposed to run at 266fsb. The barton core XP's that run at 333fsb start at 2600+. 300W ps's should be enough power as I recently made a 2600 XP system w/ a 300W Powmax ps that runs fine. Keep the cpu at 266 and try again the memory at 333. Good advice from reply #5
