Subject: My startup gets slower and slowerOS: Windows 98CPU/Ram: 400mhz/64MB |
Comment: I have a PII 400mhz CPU and 64 MB of Ram. I realize that 64 mb of ram isn't a lot. When I first got the computer and for the first few years it didn't take very log to start up. (2.5 minutes max. before i could actually run any programs.). Now it takes 5,6,7 minutes to start up and for all the programs to load (which i went into msconfig and disabled all but the nessasary items on startup. Is there anyway to speed up the startup besides obviously getting more RAM? And would any1 know why it would slow up?

Reply: (edit)Have you deleted the temp internet files, ran scan disk and defragged the hard drive recently. You might also try PC Pitstop to see how your system is running and to check your settings for security and system settings. Another site is Freetune.

Reply: (edit)You can find out what type of RAM or motherboard by either entering the BIOS at the beginning of the computer starting up, or can just open it up and look.

Reply: (edit)Is your system looking for a network connection or other hardware that is not installed? You could try using selective startup (I think that is what it is called) I forget how to get into it. I think it is part of the safe mode screen or msconfig. The computer will prompt you to press a button to begin each item that starts and that way you can see which one is taking the most time. Anyone remember the name of this procedure and how to start it? It may be one of the options in the msconfig menu. I am using a win 2000 machine now, which does not have msconfig.
