Comment: Upgrading my computer was one of the best things i've ever done for myself. With a $1200 license to kill from my dad plus 350 bucks of my own, i was able to get a computer that is now envied by everyone i know. (i'm enjoying it while my reign lasts) NEWEGG NEWEGG NEWEGG NEWEGG NEWEGG NEWEGG
Certainly a good egg! I love that store. For 1499 + 41shipping i was able to get this: ENERMAX WHITE/BLUE ATX 10-BAY MID-TOWER CASE w/ POWERUP 300W POWER SUPPLY 2 WD WESTERN DIGITAL "SPECIAL EDITION" 80GB 7200RPM EIDE HARD DRIVES - OEMS Soyo SY-KT400 Dragon Ultra (Platinum Edition) Motherboard AMD ATHLON XP 2200+ - OEM Thermaltake DRAGON ORB3 CORSAIR MEMORY XMS 512MB PC-2700C2PT With Platinum - Silver Heat Spreader - OEM SAPPHIRE RADEON 9700 PRO 128MB DDR TV/DVI 8X AGP - OEM SONY 15.0" TFT LCD MONITOR Model SDM I reused my MS Keyboard & Mouse, the Mitsumi Floppy, 40X Burner, 16X DVD-ROm I haven't overclocked anything yet. I have good options for that though. I'll wait till the competition in my area gets close first. Most of the items are OEM. That doesn't both me. They all came with whatever standard software i needed. The cpu didn't come with any fan. that's why i got that thermaltake. It's only been three days and the sound from that fan is beginning to get to me. That's about the only problem i have now. The only that's left to be desired is probably a powerful sound card from creative and a set of speakers. I'll get those soon
I'm not bragging but i just want to show how easy it is to upgrade any system now, especially at newegg. I highly recommend it to anyone, newbie, experts, everybody. And their fedex shipping is excellent only two-days.
Running this Athlon system compared to what i running before is a dream come true. Things that use to take forever to be done now happen at the blink of an eye. (sometimes i scare myself) Some people on this forum have been saying how windows 98 & 2000 are better than xp. With a system like mine, XP is the best Microsft performer. redhat comes in second, but that probably because i like it. I boot 98, 2k,XP, Redhat and Mandrake and use System Commander 7 as my boot loader.
Post your specs, and let's compare and see where i can improve apon.

Reply: (edit)wow, you may as well as work for newegg.com's marketing team :0), anyways, one area I think you can improve is your power supply, 300w is barely enough. and since you wanted to compare specs, ok..here's my to-be built system P4 2.8GHz with Thermalright AX-478 on Asus P4T533 512MB -> 1GB Samsung PC-1066 RDRAM Either two western digital WD1200JB hard drives or a single WD2000JB ATI Radeon 9700pro Soundblaster audigy platinum Antec Plus1080B case with TrueBlue480 PSU Some generic NIC with Gigabit support and 56k modem Klipsch Promdeia 5.1 speakers with decoder Logitech Cordless elite duo Plextor 48/24/48CD-RW, any 48X CD-ROM, any 16x DVD-ROM, a future DVD+R/W generic floppy drive with Atech Pro II and of course, an acrylic window case, with blue cold cathode lights and blue LED case fas and sliver rounded IDE cables What do you think? Price = approx. $2000 (thank goodness for ebay!)

Reply: (edit)Newegg probably can't afford me with those low prices that they always seem to get. hats off to n3985, good job. I don't like/hate INTEL. You can be assured that i'll be getting that 2800+ as soon as it is available. You that's the only thing that i get hate about AMD. What are they so slow? I know they have to work on their products but they really shouldn't keep us/me waiting. and what's up with the FSB. when's it gonna go up.

Reply: (edit)Computers that fast make mine look bad. You could try getting a quiter heatsink. The Zalman CNPS6000-Cu flower heatsink only goes up to like 35 decibels or something and works really well. 400W should be sufficient for your power supply, but you might want to get more like 500W if you plan on adding more hard drives and making a RAID array or something of that nature.

Reply: (edit)To Narvind: I think a good 430w will not only be enough now, but also will last when you add more power guzzlers in the future (gfx and CPU will only comsume more and more). As for the intel/amd issue, both of them their fastest processors are usually the same speed, intel as of now as the upper hand, but when the 2800 comes out, who knows...I prefer intel is because i got bit by the intel bug (lol) and I prefer a cooler system. Also, for your fan noise problem, I suggest getting a new performance heatsink, THEn put on a smaller and slower fan with less noise. My heatsink of choice is Thermalright. Like any modern heatsink, you choose the 80mm fan to put on, it could be a Delta fan that puts out 82cfm with a 52dBA rating, or some generic 32cfm with 28dBa fan. What I'm doing is this: P4 -> Thermalright AX-478 ->generic 80mm fan with blue LED -> Alien face grill, so when the case mod is done, I can see thru it and see my processor badged with an alien!
