I'm sure this question has been asked before..but i am kinda new at the hardware side of technology...
i am planning on purchasing the amd 64 3400 processor and i would like to know which motherboard would best suit my needs for cad and graphics use. i would like it to also support an sata hard drive. Would be having 1gb of ram. And of course all the typical bells and whistles.
I would like to stick w/ the asus brand.thanks for the help
Tony

Check Tom's Harware for reviews of the latest A64 boards. If you want dual channel, you'll have to go with the new socket 939 CPUs
http://www.tomshardware.com/motherboard/index.html
Asus A7N8X-X
1800+ @8x210mhz
512mb PC3200
Ti4200/8X 128mb
WDC 60GB

Gigabyte / asus / abit - I have built over 100 systems with these motherboards and they are great...stay away from MSI, soltek, biostar, pc chips, XFX.
Epox and DFI are great boards too.

dual channel has to do with ram
you can buy dual kits of ram(2 matched sticks) and run them in dual channel mode if your motherboard supports dual channel modewhat this essentially does is run 2 sticks as one so 2 sticks of pc3200 running in dual channel mode are essentially running as one stick of pc6400
at least that's my take on it
other people have said it's like tearing down the wall between rooms to make one big room
common sense isn't very common

Socket 754- http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-512&depa=1
Socket 939-

BUtta My Fries
Abit NF7-s
Athlon XP 2100+ @2.0ghz 400fsb
1024mb PC3200
Geforce 6800

As for brand name motherboards-I think the Biostars are excellent boards. I never had a problem with them. And the newer one with all functions on board looks very tempting, Video GeForce, Audio, and Lan (all-in-one). What more can one ask for? About $50.00

I disagree with some of the things in reponse #2. Gigabyte shouldn't be in the list, read tom's hardware guide, those boards have major compatibility problems with memory and such. There have been lots of errors on my friends board so he switched over to an MSI nforce3 250GB chipset one and runs a lot better. I say MSI > Gigabyte anyday, read tom's hardware guide, its right up there with ASUS.
So my recommendation is Asus/MSI.
Im on a MSI k8n Neo-FSR, the thing runs GREAT.

ok ok
what you have to realize is that it's all a crap shootno piece of computer hardware can be made perfect a million times
you are gonna have occasions where a harddrive fails after a year or a motherboard is a POS
and unfortunately "stuff" happens and your friends gigabyte board sucks or my hitachi harddrive fails after a year
does that mean that every harddrive by that brand is crap or that every motherboard by that brand is crap?
no
there are, however, definitely brands to avoid at all costs
*cough... pc chips...cough...DELL*that's just my 2 cents
common sense isn't very common
