AXP-M feeling a tad slow in windows? Try this!

----------------------

http://www.all4amd.netfirms.com/

Scroll to the bottom for the regedit.

No proof on wether it works or not, but logicly, it would.

Itunes feels smoother, but maybe its just the placebo effect. Mine was set @ 256kb for my XP-M, set it to 512.... runs fine.
Here's how:

1. Launch the Registry Editor (Start>>Run>>Regedit.exe)

2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session
Manager\Memory Management.

3. Double-click SecondLevelDataCache DWORD value.

4. Using the options below, change the value in the Value Data text box
to a number that matches the size of your Level 2 cache. Then click OK.

Level 2 cache >>>> Value Data setting
256 KB >>>>>>>>> 0
512 KB >>>>>>>>> 200
1024 KB >>>>>>>> 400

5. Click OK and close the Registry Editor.

You will need to restart the system or log out of Windows XP for the change to take effect.

I don't have a mobile XP (yet), but that sounds like a good tip. I have an XP 1800+ Tbred & just checked my registry setting - it's at zero.

Can anyone with an actual desktop Barton confirm that their's is set to 200 by default?

As an aside here...tried it on my Tbred B 2400+ and it simply increased shutdown/restart speed by about 30 seconds.

No other differences noted.

I'd like to see some differences on a barton or a mobile chip.

Skip,

I saw a difference in how quickly it opened programs also. But I don't even have the correct mobo for the Barton Mobile. But I was very impressed by the performance increase. Only runnin at 1600 plus. But not far away from 2500 plus. Just a few more days and I will have it!!!

Skip,

Confused by response 5. Increased speed by 30 seconds?

Should have made it clearer. Took thirty seconds longer after setting from 0 to 200 and returned to normal after setting the dword value back to 0.

No other applications executed any faster or slower than normal.

I don't doubt that you do. But you have a mobile CPU.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Skip tried it with his 2400+ Tbred desktop CPU to see what would happen.

Nice find... xXx-HotShot-xXx ...!!!!

Im Running a 2500xp mobile barton and i've seen changes..

When i turn my pc on and it boots up , the windows 2000 screen appears almost straight away..before it was at least 10 seconds..

I used to see the post screen and the white line that goes across the bottom of the screen before the windows 2000 screen and now it does not show it at all because it boots so quick...

I have also noticed and increase in speed / smoothness in windows...

Once again...... nice find .. xXx-HotShot-xXx

Jam/Skip,

I scratch what I said about speeding up computer. It has slowed my folding down to half speed. But it did seem to open programs quicker. Does this mean a setting of 0 really equals 512 L2 cache and a setting of 200 equals 256 L2 cache? Or is problem only related to the fact that a PC just doesn't recognize a Mobile Barton processor? Who knows?

Now I have set it back to 200 to get the 512 L2 cache. Got confused on what WU I was working on. Sorry for the confusion. But I do think it will improve the overall
performance. Will keep an eye on it.
