Hi,

Very strange problem here, just bought a new mobo/CPU/RAM combo (see specs below), and i wanted to test the stability of the RAM using a boot CD of memtest86, which has always worked and still works fine on any other machine...
But on this one it reboots immediatly! If i look closely i can see the blue memtest screen for a split second and then it just reboots..

Why the hell is this? it's still working fine on any other PC..

Please can anyone tell me how to fix this or if there is an other way to test my RAM...

Thanks in advance.

To start with, why do you have DDR2-1000? Are you overclocking your CPU to 500MHz?

DDR2-1000 is little more than factory overclocked DDR2-800. I'm sure it's spec'd out much higher than 1.8v, which is the voltage that all JEDEC compliant RAM runs at. Make sure to manually configure the BIOS settings. You RAM probably runs at 2.0v or higher...it's possible the BIOS is defaulting to 1.8v. And when you run memtest, do it with one stick at a time.

Another thing you can try is to underclock the RAM. If you're gonna keep the Q6600 at it's default freqency, the RAM should be run in sync as DDR2-533 @ 1.8v.

Dude, i've tried running it at 800MHz, with manual and auto timings, also tried raising the RAM voltage up to 2.5v, still doesn't work..

Surely if the memory was not stable it would atleast START memtest right? i might get errors but atleast it'll run..

btw, CPU is 7 hours prime stable, no errors

Did you try running memtest with just 2 sticks of RAM ?

What version of Memtest are you running? Have you tried running Memtest with only one stick of RAM in? Can you actually boot into Windows? I assume you can, unless you're using a Prime boot disk too.

"Dude, i've tried running it at 800MHz"

Well, dude, the 1st thing you need to do is refer to your CPU & RAM in terms of frequency, not the bogus/theoretical DDR & QDR ratings.

Your CPU runs at 1066MHz FSB (266MHz frequency) so why would you wanna run your RAM at 800MHz (400MHz frequency)? Dial down your RAM to 533MHz (266MHz Frequency) to match the CPU, manually set the timings & set the RAM voltage at 1.8v. Why the would you jack it up to 2.5v? Are you deliberately trying to fry it??

Disconnect the HDDs - you don't need them to run memtest. And I don't know if you have 4 x 1GB or 2 x 2GB but regardless, don't test all 4GB at once, test one stick at a time.

How did you test the CPU without working RAM?

"How did you test the CPU without working RAM?"

Because my RAM is working fine, i just wanted to make sure to be totally error-free by running memtest for some hours..

So that's whats so strange about it, no problems with memory whatsoever while memtest is doing this crazy s---e...

"And I don't know if you have 4 x 1GB or 2 x 2GB"

I've got 2x2GB, tried them both seperatly in all slots, still can't boot into memtest...
Also disconnected all the HDDs.. didn't help either...

I will try to run it at 533MHz when i get home ...not sure how this is going to help though, surely memory which is rated at 800MHz in a board which supports up to 1066MHz should work @ 800MHz, although it wouldn't increase performance...

btw, i'm using memtest86 v3.1

Thanks again

Actually, it can decrease performance. Try running the CPU/RAM at a 1:1 ratio.
