CPU/Ram: P4 1.6mhz / 256mb
Comment:

I have a thinkpad A31 P4 1.6 256mb laptop which uses a "256MB PC2100 266MHZ 200 PIN DDR SODIMM"-memorycard.
I recently ordered and recieved another 256MB. But when I install it, it only upgrades my system by 128MB.

After looking closer on the memory card, it says "256MB PC2700 333MHZ 200 PIN DDR SODIMM". Is it the incorrect Bus-frequency that is causing the problem? Is there anything I can do or do I have to return the memory-card?

Thank you in advance.

- Jim

PC2100 and PC2700 should be able to work together, the laptop would just take the slower of the two. However, you have to check if your laptop memory is made for double or single sided DIMM. Your 256 PC2700 likely double sided and the expansion memory module is meant for single sided memory, hence only 128 MB or one side is recognize.

If I am wrong, I am sure others will point out.

Real_cools idea sound quite reasonable as I doubt you board only supports 384MB. But check anyway and also check if there are only special Ram combinations possible!
It can't hurt!

And when you check about single or double sided check is both slots are the same and what sort the ram you have is. Maybe you can swap then if one slot supports double sided ram and the other not (just had that on an old pentium as I tried to install additional 32MB Ram)!

Thank you guys.

It is most likely the double/single-side memory issue that is the problem.
