CPU/Ram: 3200+ Barton / 2 x 512MB
Comment:

my pc keeps restarting randomly after a few hours (BSOD) and memory read errors with HL2 & CS:S and other games.

Case temps are usually 30c, CPU 50-55c (not o/c) never above 60c. RAM sticks have copper heat spreaders, CPU has Zalman CNPS6000-Cu with artic silver compound. Case has two fans (top and side) and front and back vents/grills so plently of air flow!

Any idea why it keeps restarting after a few hours??

Weak psu?
Bad memory?

Use memtest to check your ram.....http://www.memtest86.com/#download0

What graphics card do you have?
Whats the amperage on the +12v rail of your psu(sticker on the side)

My PSU is a 400w HI-POINT
Memory test came out fine (its kingston value ram btw)
Ive got a ati sapphire 9600 (passivly cooled)
+12v rail says 18amps
Checked voltages with nvidia monitor and they are all normal

if the psu is the worry i got 1 hdd, 1 cdrw, 1 dvdrw, soundblaster, pci usb card, tv card, 2 LED fans and the cpu fan, a neon tube, and never more than 5 USB devices plugged in- is that to much for a 400w psu- surely a 300w psu could handle that plus the motherboard etc??

Wattage don't mean that much if there aint no amperage.18a is ok just.

Do you have the 4pin molex connector plugged in?
What are the memory read errors?
Have you checked the event viewer?
What ratio do you have the cpu/ram at?Should be 1:1.

I found that my soundblaster card added 10c to the cpu heat so I now use onboard sound, which is great anyway.

What are the heat threshhold settings at in bios?

i would say what the memory read errors were but i havent recorded any of them. On half life its "Memory could not be read at 0x00000..." (000's arnt exactly what it says) etc.
As for the BSOD, sometimes it apprently just a random system file (the specified file changes) thats causing the error, or sometimes is comes with the 0x00000 memory stuff again.

dont know what you mean by cpu:ram ratio, i dont do any overclocking or changing settings like that in the bios. memory and fsb are at 1:1 anyway if thats what you mean.

taking out soundblaster took 10c off cpu?? i will try that- is the onboard sound on the nfs-2 as fast as the soundblaster in games?

tried omega ati video drivers before, made half life 2 drop by 5fps so i took it off, wernt on there long enough to see if it stoped the restarting. doubt it to be honest.

ive disabled my tv card and sound card in device manager and its been fine so far- may have solved the problem....

Hopefully eh.

Has it lowered your temps?

re-enable 1 at a time to find out which was the culprit.

with the omega drivers you get a choice of...
a-better graphics or
b-better performance

you choose 1 when installing.

When Windows crashes with blue screen, it writes a system event 1001 and a minidump to the folder \windows\minidump
Check system event 1001 and it has the content of the blue screen

Control Panel -> Adminstrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> System -> Event 1001. Copy the content and paste it back here

i took out the soundblaster and it really has lowered my temps!! before it was 53 idle and currently its 39c after been on for a few hrs playing mp3's. it might have just been that i got rid of some dust but hey i dont dont care the restarts have stoped.

by the way on the omega drivers i dont think i got a choice of performance or quality- i remember the water not looking as good in half life 2 and a drop by 5fps. i might get rid of my 9600 and go for a 6600gt when i get some spare cash- atm doom 3 is only touching on 30fps :(

anyway thanks guys- stable gaming whoo!!
