Another computer Another query!

I have AMD Athlon XP 2400+
512MB Ram
Lanparty KT400A Motherboard

I want to know if you can give any advice on how fast I can get my CPU to go with overclocking.

In my BIOS:
My CPU clock setting is at 133
My CPU Multiplier Setting is at default

If you need to know any more information then let me know and I will get the info for you!

Can any settings be reccomended or is it just a matter of changing the settings until My computer wont boot up and then reset my CMOS and start again!?

Any help if possible is much appreciated!

Dont think you can, know you can

Further to my previos message:

I am using a program called EVEREST Home Edition to tell me the information about my computer... ie: Motherboard make/model, cpu speed etc.

I dont know if this is specific to this program or if anyone can help with this... My FSB Properties say:
Real Clock - 133Mhz
Effective Clock - 267Mhz

My Memory Bus Properties say:
Real Clock 100Mhz
Effective Clock - 200Mhz

Does this mean that I can change the settings in my BIOS to the 'effective clock' settings and my computer should be at optimum performance!?

Once again any help would be appreciated!

Good morning class, welcome to PC 101 ;) LOL

wallis_online,

Your 2400+ CPU actually runs at 2000mhz, with a mutiplier of 15.0 & a bus speed of 133mhz. Those are your "real clock" settings, 15 x 133 = 2000mhz. (Just so you know, a lot of PC related numbers are rounded down. 133mhz is really 133.333333...mhz).

AMD systems "double-pump" the CPU bus (aka FSB) so the "effective clock" is 133.3333 x 2, or 266.66666mhz, but since it's rounded down, it's referred to as 266 FSB. Everest apparently rounds up...lol

DDR SDRAM (double data rate) is treated the same way. Double the "real clock" speed to get the "effective clock" speed. Your RAM speed is currently running at 100mhz (aka DDR200).

One more thing to throw at you is bandwidth, which is the amount of data transferred per second. It can be determined by mutiplying effective bus speed by 8. Using your current settings, your CPU's bandwidth is 2136 mb/sec (267 x 8), & your RAM's bandwidth (more correctly referred to as "throughput") is 1600 mb/sec (200 x 8).

DDR SDRAM is named for it's bandwidth. For example, DDR memory designed to run at 133mhz:

133mhz x 2 = 266 x 8 = 2128 mb/sec, with rounding, it's called PC2100.

For best performance, your throughput should be the same as your bandwidth...if it's not, your RAM becomes the system's bottleneck. You should be able to see that your system isn't running efficiently as it could be. Increasing the RAM speed to 133mhz (DDR266) will balance the bandwidth/throughput ratio.

Chew on that for the time being...I'll get back to you in a little while with more info...

Good answer professor jam. I think I may save that one. I'll be sure to give credit if I use it.

Once again, overclocking results vary from PC to PC; even when assembled from identical components. The "LAN Party" KT400A is a very good board for overclocking, most especially when you throw a mobile Athlon XP cpu and some reliable high speed ram into the mix.

To get the best out of your 2400+ you need some PC3200 ram, and some decent cooling for the CPU. As jam pointed out the processor runs default @ 2000MHz (133x15.0) with a 1.6v or 1.65v depending on the core (Thoroughbred or Thorton).

Not knowing what speed you ram is for sure, I think it is safe for me to guess PC2100; fact is you will be holding yourself back by not upgrading to some higher speed (PC3200) ram. You can run the cpu and ram asynchronously when overclocking but for optimal performance with an AMD system the memory should run synchronously to the cpu bus speed.

Hopefully you have the unlocked 2400+ version, if you do my advice is to drop the multiplier to say 10x and see how far you can push the cpu clock (in 2-3mhz increments) before stability issues set in, then increase the voltage a notch or two see if you are able to load windows. If you can then start raising the multiplier to see how far you can go.

I do not expect you to go very far with the PC2100 memory, but can adjust the cpu/ram ratio along the way if it makes things easier before you get some PC3200 ram but you will be taking some performance hit doing that.

Goodluck.

This bothers me:

"My Memory Bus Properties say:
Real Clock 100Mhz
Effective Clock - 200Mhz"

PC2100 should clock at 133Mhz/266Mhz.
